cher, i can't really tell.. i was going to saw some up in hopes of finding out but its raining outside and haven't changed the blade yet.. there does seem to be would grains to some pieces thoough.. Jack, i went out and scrounged some of the schist that I have laying around.. here are some pics of flat slate like pieces and a nice rounded one.. flat pieces: rounded for comparison: Here's that piece (left) laying next to what I thought was petwood (right): let me know what you think about these.. does this look more like the schist you are talking about ? [EDIT] Jack, after busting all this up this afternoon, i believe you're right about this stuff... just as you discribed... also, there is a very fine silt/dirt like material between most the layers.. [EDIT]Ratt's...!! thanks jimmy

Just my unknowing opinion but those two pieces don't look anything alike. I still think it looks like pet wood but it might be better to know when it's sawed if you can see any kind of rings.

Yes Jimmy , I still think it is schist and nothing else. It used to fool me too in the beginning . No harm done though , we can only learn from our experiences. There are some very nice types of schist about , well worth taking home for having in the garden are just at the backdoor for looking at.
Enjoy
Jack
