Good advice, you should have told me before! Oh, don't worry, no way will I let the dremel win. And soon, my friend, soon. Hopefully.

Dang, Mike! That looks hurtful.
Try dopping small stones to work with the Dremel so your fingers stay out of the way. gemfeller gave me that tip when I was carving that opal. Way easier than trying to hold it in your fingers.

Okay, I laughed out loud when I saw the pic! In truth, not because I was making fun of you...but because I turned the laptop to my wife and asked her, "Look familiar?" LOL
I did the same dang thing the first day I had the slant cabber! It wasn't hurting, so I didn't figure anything was going all that wrong! LOL
My grandmother used to wear a thimble when she was sewing...maybe you and I need to invest in ten thimbles each! LOL
ps...it's going to suck for awhile until it grows out. It's going to be brittle and keep "splitting" until that fully grows out. You could always smear some super glue on it while it's growing out, but it'll look like you're wearing clear nail polish!

I do a good job of protecting my fingers. One day, I needed to sand the super glue of six pairs of earrings and there was a lot of blood. I have a good customer who wanted the backs of cabs polished, I try to avoid it. When I was working on cabs two days a week, I would polish the backs on some. I had 5 days for my fingers to heal. I had a few lessons on cabbing when I started out and was taught to use dop wax which makes polishing backs possible without finger damage, but I hated having stones that I was working on come off the dop. It ruined the work flow.

I dop with wax but I use my secret trick -- shellac dissolved in some denatured acetone alcohol (a tiny bottle). Paint it on the back of the cab, heat the stone up a bit and then dop like you normally would with wax. I haven't had a stone pop off since I started doing that years ago.

Smart. Except I said acetone instead of alcohol.

Here's what happens to a thumb when a person decides to make a ring-sized cab with a dremel. Not advisable.
When I was in high school I went to a guys house to learn how to make spheres. He did everything by hand, only home made equipment. I ground the sphere by hand in a steel pipe. After two days of grinding all the skin on my palms was so thin even warm water felt hot.

I'm a huge nail biter, and anytime I get a crack.....riiiiiiiiiip. I've used it on cuts and stuff but never nails. Huh, today I learned! I also learned the PO doesn't want you to get your slabs miket - Glad that's all it was. Please don't be sacrificing your digits like that. Us less crafty people need more wrap pictures to inspire us to actually DO some wrapping....

OUCH!!! Been there, done that.
I dop, but I have to wrap 2 fingers with green alligator tape. Because of the way I hold the stone to the wheel the tops of my pointers sometimes rub the wheels. It gets bad real quick. I never forget the tape.

It's not sore anymore- I was back in the garage the next night. Yeah I'm a glutton for punishment! 😁

miket What’s really fun is if you do that, forget about it and start prepping dinner. Mexican or Thai food, especially. Onion, garlic, chili peppers and limes all remind you that the diamond burn (aka cabber’ s disease) is still there. They also seem to sanitize it. No need for Neosporin after that treatment
