I sell as a hobby. Today I got an email saying I'm approaching the limit where a 1099-k is required which according to Etsy is $20,000 and 200 payments in a year. It's December and I'm not half way to those numbers. I sent them in an email about the issue and I may or may not hear back from them. I don't have much confidence in their support. This is from their FAQ
Federal IRS Requirements Etsy is required to issue a 1099-K form to you and the IRS if you meet both of these requirements:
You had $20,000 USD in sales through Etsy Payments during the calendar year. You received 200 or more payments through Etsy Payments over that same period.
At some time my all time stats will reach those numbers but not in a calendar year.
On my dashboard I now get the following display:
Shop advisor Invalid Taxpayer Information Your taxpayer information is either missing, or doesn't match IRS records. Due to regulations, your Etsy Payments may be frozen if you exceed certain sales thresholds without providing valid taxpayer information.
The notification was premature and the message is heavy handed.

There is a Federal requirement and can be a STATE requirement. Which may be very different from each other.
It is possible you have reached your state requirements
Ive never had any problem with their support team and they have always been very helpful

Also check in your Finance section (taxpayer info) and ensure all the fields are completed
I completely forgot I needed to update my address in that section

Papypal will sent you reminders, too. In this regard, I can't fault etsy- they are just following the law.

Yep. The various levels of gov't want their share of your wallet. I bet it gets worse as the pandemic resides.

I got two responses from customer service. The first confirmed the parameters. The wording in the message was may and in my case it won't happen. I do not reside in one of the states mentioned. My other issue was the parameter coded for starting the message which I believe is set too low. When the trigger point for a 1099-k is $20,000 in a calendar year and I am not at $10,000 in December why was it triggered? I am waiting for a follow up answer for that. I can either continue to ignore the message or provide the 1099k information which includes ssn. I try to limit the sites that have my ssn and have stopped buying from a site that used it for age verification for tobacco purchases. When they changed their age verification policy, I resumed buying from them.
