I recently purchased some AZ Pet Wood from Larry, QuailRiver All was amazing. I especially love these pieces. All were photographed dry. With these vibrant colors, no need to wet them. One of the larger pieces. Weighs about 6 lbs. I love the black in it and the yellows. The smallest piece. Colors are great. I also like the bark on it. Bark runs completely around the piece. Both are very tight grained and should yield some great slabs. Have not had great luck with slabbing my self collected AZ pet wood in the past. This was probably due to the amount of fractures in them and less than tight grain.

Those are gorgeous. I'm really starting to get more and more interested in pet wood. I've been finding quite a bit here lately and I'm excited to work with some of my pieces. I'll be curious to see the pics of those slabs! Are you planning on making any cabs out of the slabs, or leave them as slabs?

The smaller one will be cabbed, as will some others. Dunno about the larger one yet.
Hope to cut bark edges off the smaller one and leave those as is.

Arizona wood is sweet. I was collecting near Woodruff, AZ one time and met a guy at a gravel pit. He directed me to a rockshop where the owner had just bought a big lot of "Pit Wood" which was rainbow wood from deep in the soil that had not been subjected to the elements. Some even ad a whitish patina om the outside. Really nice stuff and almost totally fracture free, much different from the larger pieces we picked up while surface hunting tumbling material. Even nicer than what we collected at the old Greer's Milky Rch fee dig. Never did get to cut much of it though, as my wife captured most all the hunks for her flower garden. They even made the move to Texas and are in her garden here *L*.

Totally agree with these comments. AZ petrified wood is really terrific materials. Years ago, we did a stop at DoBell Ranch, near the south entrance to the Petrified Forest National Park. Came away with some really great stuff.

I have my first pet wood tumble a few days in now...really no idea what it will look like, but it's pretty similar to yours starting out.

It does seem to be true that the material collected further beneath the surface is less prone to fractures perhaps because it has not been subject to freezing or thawing in the recent past (but hard to imagine that it hasn;t sometime in history. I've cut a bunch of AZ wood and its great and rewarding stuff with the caveat that you have some wastage, and some surprise fractures as you work with it. But if you are willing to let the stone choose its own path and perhaps fill an imperfection in a piece you just can't work around it on, then you can produce wonderful stuff. Its hard and sometimes I get lazy and work a cab up to the 600 grit and then polish it in the vibe rather than going all the way on the cab machine. Again you will get a surprise chip or fracture once in awhile in the vibe but its an imprecise science. Well worth the effort.

Got mine through a couple weeks of rough...it looks like I have at least a couple more weeks before I'll move them on. I dunno, looking at it I'd guess that it will be 4 more weeks.
