I have smooth river rocks and just want to bring out the luster and different colors in them. What number grit should I use to start this process?

A lot of river rocks feel smooth to our hands, but, have a texture and/or rind and will not accept a polish in their original state. I recommend starting at a coarse grit (assuming Mohs 6-7 hardness): 46/60/90 SiC for 1 week to even out the surface before moving them on.

Start rounded rocks at 220. If they are well rounded like rocks from Brookwood AL that will work great.

Here is link to a good book about tumbling that explains all kinds of tumbling strategy for all kinds of rocks and tumblers. rocktumbler.com/book.shtmlIt was very useful to me when tumbling my larger banded agates, river run and other.
