I have been picking up rocks around where I live for the last year. Petoskies, pudding stone, coral, everything I would find at lake Huron. I thought it odd since I live 50 Mile from the lake. So I find 2 rocks last week that got me researching where I live and come to find out I live on one of the kames of stoney creek metro park. A glacial deposit in my back yard. Now back to the 2 rocks that started my research into agates of SE Michigan. I hope I am right and that they are Oolitic agates. I hope so because that would be to cool!!! Excuse the polish job on the one I cut. I rushed it. Thanks for looking!! BFR

bigfrickinrock I'm no expert, but IDK if I'd say that's oolitic. Although you have a few orbs there it looks more of a moss agate to me, and a mighty fine one considering the location. I've gotten similar from tandl which was found in east central illinois. Glacial till will hold many surprises, they're just sometimes tough to ferret out from the plain stuff.

If that is true, I would still be happy with them. And I almost didn't see the first one. It looked like a dirty piece of broken concrete. After that I was checking for dirty concrete and found the 2nd one. I would be looking for more, but that nasty white ground cover (snow) has shown up. BFR

They might be fossil coral, too.

I dont see Oolites or agate in these. More likely Chalcedony/Chert with some nice botroiydal surface feature. Fernwood may be right in that it is a fossil pseudomorph of some sort maybe a stromatolite?

T think coral is a good guess based on the center section in picture # 2.

Whatever they turn out to be, they're freakin' cool! Nice to know you're at a nice hub of a glacial deposit! I bet you're going to find some really amazing things as time goes on!!!

Some of the glacial coral I find is loaded with oolites. Here is a close up section of one piece that shows them well. Is there anything like this in your finds?

I will have to get a closer look wet and see what shows up. I also want to get a better polish on them so I can see better. Thanks for the close up picture. That is the first pic that I can see the oolites! BFR

They might be fossil coral, too. Based on pictures 3 and 4, that's what i was thinking, too.

Excuse the polish job on the one I cut. I rushed it. Thanks for looking!! BFR I live in SE Michigan and have found some rocks that are similar -- similar exterior, same color scheme, and some sort of agate-like microcrystalline interior. Mine are not as nice as yours, but I have nevertheless become obsessed with finding more. The ones I have came from a mine near Brighton, MI where they found deep deposit of glacial till. It is sold as landscaping rock at my local landscape supply store, so for $48 dollars I get 2000 pounds of 1-2" glacial till rocks. Most are uninteresting but I have found 4 or 5 rocks that appear to be of similar origins as the one you show here. I have also found lots of banded chert, jasper, quartz, and a good many interesting but unidentifiable (to me) rocks. I will respond to this post when I get a chance with photos of the rocks from SE Michigan that I think may have a common origin. Where in SE Michigan did you find the rock?

I did see both of those sites when I started researching these rocks. That is where I got the idea that they might be Oolite agates. Love the banding on the one at mwminerals. Is that yours? BFR
