WarrenA sent me some absolutely gorgeous pieces of Botswana Agate rough slabs cuts that he had made and also a piece of Jade marked out in the shapes he wanted me to finish for bola ties for him. i'd never tried to cab Jade before, so i was a little nervous. also didn't want to ruin these gorgeous agates! also included in the overall shot is a Biggs Picture Jasper piece that i made for my uncle for his birthday coming up: here is a close of the Botswana, Warren said he sliced up a lot of agate to find these two flawless pieces (in the end, Warren, the lighter color cord didn't go well, so i used both black): here is a closeup of the Biggs Jasper: the piece of jade was just a little small to accomodate the bola mechanisms i have so i asked Warren if was OK to make his better half a pendant instead: with the flash of the camera is looks a lot lighter green than it does in just daylight, but i'm happy with the way it turned out. and finally, here is a pendant i finished that i THINK is pet wood, it has some great color to it and i am going make it into a beaded necklace (as requested, Kim). thanks for looking! Wow, those are terrific, you did a beautiful job on them. How did you attach the rock to the bola piece? I'm assuming they are glued, did you rough up the back or anything?

BEAUTIFUL! Did you use a template to cut the shapes out? How do you put the stone into the pendants? Last where did you purchase the ready made pendants? Thanks much!

yes, Debs, i use a standard cab template that relates to what you can order online by size for mountings. you can get some from www.firemountain.com they offer a minimal selection at Kingsley North but i've found the greatest selection of size and variety at Rio Grande (www.riogrande.com). the cinch mounts are pretty easy once you get the stone to the right size...which can be a little frustrating but do-able with patience. BUT Doc has pointed out the cinch mounts fail with time..... KD

Wow, what a good idea!
I Love the Biggs Jasper... looks like a painting of a sandstorm, and a couple of hills in there.
Or
an ocean scene, with waves just about to crash on the rocks
Great Job KD!!!

Those are all excellent, but that Biggs Jasper is incredible. Are you sure you didn't paint that scene on a white stone? (If you did, you're a talented painter!) Joe

KD, someone at my club mentioned that she was having a miserable time polishing up jade - any special tricks?

i think it depends on the jade. this piece that WarrenA sent me polished up pretty good with no special tricks. maybe Nepherite (the diver dude) has some better insight. i've tried (and failed) at tumbling some very dark jade i got from Shorty a while back (i even bought a pound of Chrome Oxide too!). and that didn't polish well on the grinder either......so i think material plays a big part.

Great job on the stones KD. Perfect color matches on the bolos too. It is a bit tedious getting the stone just the right size and thickness to fit properly into the cinch pendants. Just glad they come in smaller sizes so if I grind too much off, I just keep going down to the next size down.
