I find many of these. Some are too large to bring home, some are to small to even bother with, some are tumbable size, and some slabable size. Some are plant life (Like in the picture... at least I'm assuming it's plant life), and others are full of tiny shells. I haven't put one through polish yet, but it takes about 2 weeks to get a good shape... faily soft, so it might not take a polish at all. Credit card sized card for size reference This is another one I found today anyway... just thought I'd share Alice

Cool- I cabbed some stuff like your first pix- took a pretty good shine- but I lost all "fossil" detail in the cutting and grinding process!

Some of the fossils in these rocks are surface fossils. Meaning they can be just erased away if you rub long enough (in your case, grind). The big one above... the fossils seem to be pretty thick. At least 1/4 " thick.

Those are some cool looking rocks! What type of stone are they? Any idea of the MOH hardness? Even if you can't polish them, they're still keepers. Nice finds. Joe

Thanks Joe,
I have no idea what type of rock they are, or how hard they are. The big one (First picture) maybe 3 or 4? The smaller one is harder (last picture) is about a 5 or 6?
The big one's kind of cool. it's flat on one side, and it can be proped up without using a stand. So it's kind of like a display rock right now, sitting on my shelf.

Another member had drilled holes in a piece of pet wood and made a penholder. If the rock sits well all by itself, maybe you could make somthing like that. Maybe you could use it as a "showcase" rock to put your polished stones on it to show them off. Collect 'em while ya can, 'cause they're cool! Joe

Thanks Joe I don't know what I plan on doing with the big one yet. If the other's polish well, then I just might do something with it. If not, then it'll just sit there on the shelf and take up space Cher, I'll keep everyone posted when I put them into polish (the others that are being worked on). I haven't done an entire load of local rocks yet. I just throw in an odd one here and there in other loads as fillers. I'm waiting till I have a barrel full and throw them all into polish at the same time.

you're gonna have to keep yourself busy with that barrel rolling for another 4 weeks. You can finish it during that time can't you?

I can only find 7 letter Y's in the top pic. Another one is questionable. But 10 of them?? Joe
