Made last weekend: Palmwood from one of the slablets sent by Tommy for the wood contest: DSC_2194_Palmwood cabochon by Stephan T., on Flickr This cab came, as an already-dopped preform, as part an estate sale. It was a tear-shape with a large gouge, and a severely uneven girdle. I evened it out, adjusted the shape to eliminate the gouge and polished it. Pretty soft stuff, but still takes a good shine. This is probably the miost fracture-free MHPJ I've had. Plucked a poppy from the back, though. Not sure what to call the palmwood shape I made. It has potential. I’m thinking along the lines of “wing,” especially if I can make it taller. I like “angel wing,” but I hate to cause confusion with angel wing chalcedony.

The palmwood looks like it has an inside swoop at the top...unless my eyes can't discern shapes like they apparently can't color! LOL I can't seem to get a good shine on the softer material I've worked in the last couple days (Lapis and Indian Paint Stone). I've been using wood dop sticks and super glue and they're definitely harder to remove than using the metal dop sticks...plus I don't get to play with fire using the wood ones! LOL I do believe that dino bone has a bit more color in it than the chunk I just picked up...I like it! How about Gaia's Wooden Wing...or I like Prosthesis de Icarus!

The palm wood reminds me of a Manta Ray shape.

The palm wood reminds me of a Manta Ray shape. Had to look a bit for that, but I see it now, especially if I did the double-swoop. Something to work on. jasoninsd you are seeing correctly. I’ve not been able to get a good shine on Indian paint stone, but one member suggested letting it get hot on the leathers, which works for jade and obsidian.

Gotcha...so you're saying I need to whip it into submission. Something new for me, but I'm willing to give it a try. Does the rock need safe word or anything?

You'll have to ask the rock. There are many that aren't even into leather. If you try, and you and the rock are both new to this, it IS a good idea to start gentle, apply heat gradually, and check in often. If something cracks, it won't be a pleasant experience for either of you. And, dude, Stevie Nicks... how did you know that she was my second celebrity crush? When I was, oh, I don't know... at The Edge of Seventeen. What a voice!
