We bought my 7 year old son a rock tumbler for Christmas. My 14 and 16 year old sons seemed to like the gift almost as much as the 7 year old. Of course Dad loves it too. It didn't take me long to realize I should have done a bit more research before buying his tumbler. It said "Amazon's choice" so we bought it. It is tumbling away in the basement as I type this and should be done with step one in a day or two. I just ordered a Lortone 33b after spending several days trying to find a decent tumbler in stock. Seems like used ones on eBay are going for as much as or more than new prices. I am a proud cheapskate and have been hunting for bulk grit but have not pulled the trigger yet. We have a trip planned this Saturday to go to Nethers farm and collect some Flint Ridge flint. I have already learned a lot from this forum and am looking forward to learning more.

Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! I think it's fantastic you've made this a family hobby! Kudos to you! The Rock Shed is a fantastic source for grit. There are a lot of reviews and recommendations for them on the forum.

Welcome to the forum from South Central Arizona (not Phoenix). I was born in Akron, Ohio but never did rockhounding until after I moved away from Ohio. Looking forward to seeing your finds.

I had almost the same experience- we (Santa) gave our grandson, who is 7, the National Geographic tumbler for Christmas and I thought Tharp it would be a great hobby to share with him, so I got a different brand, which died halfway through the first step. I then did some reading and now have two Lortone 33B tumblers going.
It is VERY addicting
