My wife called me at work the other day and said my large thumlers had a hole and was leaking all over so she turned it off. Oh yeah and she also turned off the rest of the tumblers because the 3#er also blew a hole. I didn't believe it...I knew the 3# barrel had a very thin bottom and would wear through at some point, but the 12# Thumlers has a hard plastic lid that seems impregnable and the rubber on the bottom is very very thick. Son of a gun, if She wasn't right...the 12# thumlers lid wore right though in the middle. It is 1/8 inch hard plastic but the thickness is not uniform. In the center it is just a few milimeters thick. I'll probably have a little discussion with QA at Tru Square Metal Products about this design... The pictures: First the 12# thumlers: Now the 3# Tumbler:

Eww! Looks like a lot of cleaning and scrubbing for you today.
Why is it that breakdowns and mishaps happen in multiples, it's never just one thing but several at once?

yuck! what a mess! good thing the missus was home to shut'em down! they aren't all Thumlers? the red base looks like a CE and you got a Lortone dualie there too?
what a shame to have them all go south at once!

Chass, you and I have something in common. We both have a big mess to clean up.
I had 3 explosions in 2 days.... and all the sludge and rocks ended up on the carpet, and all over the units.
I also noticed that one of my lids was wearing really thin, so I changed the lid (seeing that I had extras). But the lid was so thin, that I was able to poke right through it with my finger without much effort.
About a month ago I had another lid that was wearing thin, so I put a piece of duct tape across the lid. The lid is much thinner then the one I was able to poke through, but because of the duct tape, I can't poke through it. Maybe it'll be a good idea to put a strip of duct tape across your lid when you notice it wearing thin the next time.

Oh, yeah, I'd be having a "discussion" with somebody alright. I once put the gasket on incorrectly on my 12# unit and I've yet to get it cleaned up. Throw rugs come in real handy sometimes.

Thanks for the support, You'all... Alice...when my wife read your post about the explosions her first remark was, "Oh my God, I hope that poor woman isn't tumbling in the Living Room" and duct tape is the answer to most problems, isn't it!... Cookie/Cher, I tumble in the garage( the car survives outdoors very well, thank you) so the mess can be swept away a little bit easier... Joanna, Trouble always comes in threes, and yes, I keep looking over my shoulder. KD, a sharp pickup. The dual Lortone is my first and will always be my favorite. I got the Chicago to have a barrel just for polishing, it didnt work out that way. The 12# Thumlers is my primary weapon for coarse grind, although it may be ill-suited to the task since it spins a wee bit slower than it should. Still I can let my rocks go 2 or 3 weeks in the first stage without ever having an empty barrel. csroc

LOL, Chass, tell your wife I don't have them set up in the living room. Although maybe I should put them there. I have hard wood floors, and I would just need to take a mop to the floor, rather then scrub carpet.... but it's too noisy for the living room. I would never get the kids to sleep. Yes, duct tape works on a lot of things.... not just tumbler lids and piecing broken bottles back together

Thanx for posting the ugli pics. I'm convinced my tumblers need to go to the garage. I hope the mess wasn't too bad. Joe

I have never seen a (Lortone or CE) barrel wear through the bottom- Cool (well not really- it kinda sucks) Yes Thumber needs to do something about their lids! the plastic is just to thin and cheesy- I replaced mine with acrylic and it is difficult to get a good seal (lots of teflon tape) it does seem to wear a lot better- my next one is gonna be steel with a rubber gasket over it (like the lortone barrels) Let me know wht Tru Square tells ya!

Hey in your last picture- Is that a thumbler motor running the Lortone unit? or is it an optical illusion?

Stefen, Must be an illusion, the Lortone motor is hidden on the left side and the Thumlers is throwing a shadow on the right!
BTW, The barrel that wore through is of unknown origin. I traded a box of rocks for a sump pump and an extra 3# barrel. Never asked the owner what kind of barrel it was, but I've been using it ever since.
