In my search for the lowest priced grit I have run across aluminum oxide grit in the 60 thru 220 size that is lower priced than silicon carbide grit. It is a brown looking aluminum oxide, not the usual white stuff used for polishing. It is available on eBay being sold by seller unitedabrasive in case someone wants a.few more details. In 25 pound bags it is just under $2 per pound and in 50 pound bags it is just over $1.50 per pound. My question is will this aluminum oxide work the same as silicone carbide?

I’ve had horrible luck with stage 3 aluminum oxide by MJR. I personally think it stains my rocks as they come out grey/frosty but have no scratches . It will dye your pellets an everything grey

It’s been my experience you get what you pay for with grit

The grit kit I bought from The Rock Shed uses 500 aluminum oxide as stage 3 pre polish. I have not used it yet, just seems like if staining was a common problem they wouldn't sell it.

Silicon carbide is used for cutting and shaping rocks. It is sharp. Aluminum oxide is for finishing steps. Less sharp and smooths the surface in steps It will take a very long time to shape/round rocks using aluminum oxide.
