Here is my haul from this past weekends rock expedition. We went to an old mine near home where they were digging for apatites (I was told they use this stuff for prosthetics?) I, at least, half filled a huge 5 gallon paint bucket. Funny story: I was in one spot digging & scratching and had accumulated a good 20 pounds at least of stuff in a garbage bag. I then moved on to another spot in the shade but left the bag there to collect later, and started collecting in another bag. Someone from the club came by on a whim to chat and volunteered to bring my stuff back to the car. Well he thought he was bringing back my little bag with about 2 pounds of stuff in there, but when I pointed him in the direction of the other bag, his face just dropped. I'm really glad he brought it back as I NEVER would have made it back with all that stuff. My pack was full & this is my story. Here is a small portion of the load - it's a small bucket Here are some of the crystals shaped ones Here is a Stonehenge version of the crystals (I found one that was crystal shaped on both ends & gave it away to the collectors - I kept the broken pieces Here are blue quartz (as I said, must be a morphed local variety same as sodaextralite - this must be bluelite quartz Close-up - bad quality pics - indoor lighting sucks - More of the same Some sextagon shaped crystals The mother of all shaped crystals this is a huge chunk I've been told that these will shape up nicely and although softer they should take a shine - the crystals are already shiny so they should shine up right Thanks for looking

Alice, it's in Cantley, quebec, near Ottawa about 45 minutes from home - not at all what I was expecting in terms of a mine

Wow, nice rocks. Wish we had rocks around here like that. So is the blue quartz not blue?

Looks like you had a fun day out! Did you work up an appetite collecting your apatite? (Sorry, couldn't resist) Joe

When I used to hear the word "mine" I always pictured a man made cave with train tracks, and you'd have to bring flash lights & head gear, and a canary (just to be on the safe side). But after I visited Crystal Grove to go mining for Herkimer diamonds, my image was shattered. it was just a large hole in the ground. Is that what this mine looks like? Here's the hole in the ground

Alice this wasn't even a hole in the ground, more like a hillside - there was an actual cave but it was dangerous - had bats in there (which i don,t mind) but there was no way in our out - just a big hole with a cave 50 feet down.

Nice haul tweet! THat Apatite should turn out nice- I would save the crystal shaped ones (the whole ones) and tmble the fractured chunks- I think your blue quartz is actuaally Tourmalinated quartz (quartz with tourmaline inclusions) Some polished great- some sucks (see the photos on the home page of the quartz and the carniela runs) sounds like a good time all the way around!

Stefan, nah, I'm tumbling all of it if I can I have nowhere to "collect" stuff - I leave the nice crystals for those with the collections. Besides most of the crystals that I found are pretty beaten up!

I got a polished piece of apatite last night at our club Bingo and it was very nice, almost looks like an emerald...
