all of the supplies I have, I bought before joining this list..... So I had no idea what to get. I bought the first dual 3# CC tumbler on EBay,,,,, belts broke the first day, so I then went to the first website I found, Finnell's and ordered a dual 3# Thumler and a model B Thumler 15#...... and ordered three kits of charge for each barrel; consisting of coarse, fine, prepolish and polish, I have no idea what kind of polish it is.....<G> (Mr Finnell was a very nice person to deal with)..... I'm using it until it's all gone and if I see that I have a certain type of rock that ya'll recommend a specific polish for, I will order it,,,,, as for the rock, I tried to sort by hardness but not really sure I'm doing it right,,,, but I figured that it was just found rock here, I could make a mistake and learn..... it must be HARD stuff though! <G> because I have been putting in some pieces that I bought and it's eating it away, so had to take out ! and the pasture rock, to me is a lot of fun. Most of it did polish very well and fast. right now the big 15# is full of coarse and this will be it's last charge, if that stuff isn't doing anything by now, it goes in the driveway ! it will take a shape, but if there are any cracks, holes or different "blends" of rock together, the spots just seem to get worse instead of better, they must be deep. I had one piece of fossil agate that I found here and one that came in a box of mixed, well the one I found here polished smooth, but the other is only taking a polish on the "mother material" and the fossils are just eating holes in it.... the most fun is the quartz, wood and odd rocks <G> this weekend I am taking my "bucket" out again, maybe to the river.... there's a petrified TREE down there, each time the river rises and falls more is exposed or covered up.... fun to see what happens,,,, I tried to get my husband to see if he could get it out,,,,, but even a backhoe didn't get it out.... I get very "deep" when I look at the pet wood, I love it,,,, I always hold it, rub it and wonder what this tree saw, what walked under it, what ate it's leave, what climbed it, what nested in it....things we can only imagine, I suppose.... so when I tumble it, I do it with respect.....and I have some large pieces or unusual pieces that I can't change, they are fine just the way they are.....

Cool I love your methods- Oh and Pet wood- well respect is an understatement when I work it- I cannot bear to part with any of it (i even save the tiny chips that come off it when I saw it) I just love the stuff! I had 2 nice polish slabs of it when I was a kid. It was from AZ- incredible stuff- well it got left in a storage area during our move from the burbs to the country and one of my *relatives* took it upon themselves to sell everything in this storage area- without our knowledge- I was handed a quarter for the little box of rocks they sold for me- I have hardley spoken to the *relative* in 25 years!

That is a great first batch Do you have anything else to tumble or can you feel the withdrawal symptoms kickin in... csroc I have some rocks in all of the barrels now; in different stages.....funny how I started all of them out at the same time, same coarse..... and over these short weeks they have been picked over, rearranges, and are now staggered through different times frames..... I rather like it like this,,,,, now I have something different all of the times I look ! The batch that I said would go in the driveway if it didn't look good after all of this time is getting "one more chance" :-/Funny how I just didn't have the heart the "Chunk" them yet..... next week the next polished batch will be ready, hopefully ! I did take some out of polish and put them back into the PrePolish batch? ;D is that possible ? I wasn't happy with them and thought they could be smoother.... oh well, I'm learning, that's what it's about.... Monday I'm going to get some more square wire to wrap a couple that I really liked out of the first ones..... hope they turn out.... thanks everyone for the encouragement..... It's addictive,,,, donna

Moving rocks back is ok- but when you move back from polish- move to 500 or 1000- pre polish reall does not do any grinding action- I always think of it as a preview- not really a grinding stage-

Donna, Something that might help you decide weather a rock is "smooth" enough for the next stage is a 10X jewelers loupe.
When you are happy with a rock in that it is ready for the next stage(what ever it is) keep it for a reference.Do this through all the stages and label the rocks. You can store them in zip lock bags or whatever.
With the next batch you rough compare the "good" rock with the newly roughed rock. You will see a sort of matte finish on both.Compare the matte and if the newly roughed rock has the same textured matte it's ready for the second stage.
It takes a little practice but it sometimes will get you out of a bind.
For the heck of it,,,,,look at your polished rocks and you may be surprised!
One more thing,,,,,,Well maybe two!! LOL
The loupe has to be at least a 10X.
Keep a log of everything you do so you can refer back to it and avoid making the same mistakes.
Hope this helps,,,,,,,,,
