Howdy all, Promised so more pics from the Hornitos jasper area. Decided cabs would be best to show the materials polished. tried to make them smaller so they wouldn't take up so much space. Sorry pic quality is not so good. Pic #1 top: Firefly Jasper bottom:Hornitos Flowering Jasper Just a couple of one type of brecciated jasper: two pics from the orbicular jasper veins: Hornitos Flowering Jasper ( other types): Sierra Primrose Jasper (rarest type in nodular form): Cosmos Jasper, looks like stars against a night sky:Third pic from bottom

Here's just a couple more big pics. The first is the water tank brecciated jasper my neighbor told me about. The second is a big vein hunk I found in the newly graded roadside of a neighboring ranch.

Cookie: The Firefly Jasper is the top two cabs in the first pic.
Joe: Yep. Finding the rocks is kindof a odd story. Bought the ranch for a wildlife refuge and maybe to run a few horses and cattle. Had no idea there were even any good Jurrasic cherts in the Sierras as most sites I've heard of are along the Coast Range. Only thing I knew Hornitos was famous for was as the hideout of the famous mexican bandito, Jouquin Murietta. Was downtown in Mariposa and went into a small tourist rockshop and spotted this slab of fantastic jasper. Asked where from and the spot they named was where I had purchased the land. Went out in the pasture and found a hunk of poppy jasper right off the bat. My mouth flat dropped to the ground and then I did a real happy dance *L*! Talk about friggin good luck!!

Hey Sabre. Where is Hornitos, exactly. I've seen road signs but can't remember exactly where. That is some nice jasper. Want to make a trade for some Morgan Hill poppy jasper?

Ed: Have a pretty good supply of most calif. materials including Morgan Hill ( although I must admit it's hard to find unfractured material from that location. It sucks that so many of these good cherts are fractured!). Kinda holding out for some stuff from the guys and gals back east as I've never collected out that way. I'll sure keep your offer in mind though as I'm sure there are some of the Llagos Creek varieties I still dont have ( got an incredible unfractured green and gold examlpe a few weeks ago!. How about posting a few pics on this site of the varieties you have to offer? I'm sure others would like to see them too. Hornitos is a little semi-ghost town on J-16 northwest of Mariposa in Mariposa county. Don't get your hopes up though. All the jasper locations are either exhausted or on private ranches and access is usually only available to owners or neighbors the ranchers know well. Strangers are referred to as lowlanders and are fairly unwelcome due to all too frequent incidences of trespass...sabre

So Sabre... ummm, er, so how would you like to adopt us? All of us. Were not THAT much bother, and we wont eat much. Just 600 or so of your "family" lowlanders! You wont even know we're there. Seriously, congrats on such a good land purchase and good luck with the refuge. Joe

Susan, *LOL* about adoption comments. Man, I already have too much responsability with about 25 raptors to help take care of. Yup, married for like, forever! *L*
