Completed my third and fourth intarsia cabs today. The third one is Owyhee picture jasper framed in more Owyhee picture jasper. I didn't realize that the slab that the blueish bits came from had a brownish surface layer until I started cabbing it. Because I didn't grind through that to begin with the blue joints are dark. Know better for next time. This one is about 37 mm by 35 mm. I couldn't make up my mind which side of the centerpiece I liked best, so this one is backed with glass. Not sure that I'm happy with it. The fourth one is Pinolith framed by red jasper and howlite and backed with basenite. Its about 46 mm by 41 mm. Thanks for looking!

Nice work! What bothers you about the glass backing?

I find your intarsia work amazing. I will say that Pinolith really stands out as a showstopper!

Nice work! What bothers you about the glass backing? Thank you. Compared to the front side of the piece the back seems dark.

I’m wondering about the type of glass...

Very nice work. I also wondered if you used the ultra clear glass.

That pinolith is sublime. Very evocative. Good job and the darker lines look fine to me.

I think the glass is just basic window glass picked up at the hardware store. I polished with 14k diamond on canvas. I think I will put just the back side on felt with cerium oxide. Thank you victor1941 and rockjunquie

The Pinolith looks like one of those selective color (aka color-splash) photos. Very cool.

Congratulations!!! Great work and the pinolith is indeed a showstopper! I agree with others here on the glass backing. Not a thing wrong and it solves 2 frequent dilemmas of dealing with double-sided material. First is the frustrating “which side to use dilemma” when working with picture jaspers and other patterned or flashy, chatoyant material. Second, it solves the structural integrity issue inherent with “unbacked” pieces. The only down side is the additional work involved to design a double-sided setting to show it off...ha!😁

Thanks Bill! I'm okay with using glass, I'm just not quite satisfied with how it turned out. Designing that double sided setting is my DH's challenge. victor1941 what is ultra clear glass?

My understanding is this glass does not contain iron which produces a slight green tint and is therefore clearer.

I wonder if window glass might have stuff in it to allow for less UV light?

Thank you victor1941, I was blissfully unaware of the iron. Now I know to look for ultra clear glass for any future ventures with glass! Thank you betojdesigns, all kind words are appreciated. Rockoonz, yet another likely possibility.
