The first one looks like iron slag to me (always a let down for people who think they found a meteorite).

The second one looks like it could be Unakite.

The second one looks like it could be Unakite. That was one of my thoughts as I was researching. Unakite can be tumbled correct?

Only reason I wasn’t sure about unakite is I don’t see any pink really. It looks like iron oxide mixed in there to me, but I could be wrong

Would hematite be common in areas near old iron mines? If hematite is the ore that’s being extracted, then yes. It’s far from the only iron ore, though.

Depending on where in NJ you found it. The latter one looks a lot like the Coon Creek formation in TN so I am going to say it is a glauconitic mudstone/clay from the cretaceous. check for cretaceous fossils in the area (ammonite, shark teeth, mosasaur bones, turtle shell, gastropods and oysters). should be easily cut with a knife.
If the first rock has a red streak then hematite. Otherwise to dark to tell from the image.
