So I decided that there was some material that I wanted to work and took the plunge and ordered these slabs. They just got here... Larimar, 2 Pietersite slabs and a nice big hunk of Palm Root. Can't wait to get started on these! Thanks for looking.

Looks promising, Mike. You'll need all your skilz for that Larimar. It's a bear to cab. The pietersite looks nice. Should cab up nicely. Palmroot is always nice.

Larimar is a challenge

I probably should have done my research with the Larimar. I'm not very good with softer material and may want to pass it along to someone- I just liked the blue! The other slabs should produce some nice cabs, hopefully...

I thought you were gonna say you splurged on a machine. Larimar is a challenge No, not yet. I've been tempted, though. I have, however, started purchasing some wheels...

Mike, I'm going to do both of us a favor. I'm not going to mention any of this to my wife...that way when I place my own order of Pietersite and Palm Root and they show up at my house in the near future, she won't be trying to blame you for putting me up to it! She'll never let us go out and play in the rocks together! LOL Those are gorgeous! I can't wait to see what you do with them!

miket nice ones. Eager to see what you do with them jasoninsd for a small fee (payable in Fairburns), you can go ahead and throw me under the bus. That way you and Mike can keep collecting.

Mike, The larimar will polish up beautifully. The issue is with the edges chipping off. I have had some success by backing the pre-forms with a thin layer of JB Weld. Then simply remove the layer of JB weld when the cab is finished.
As for the pietersite....well you just can't go wrong with that!
Have fun!

The edge chipping was always my problem. I have a few really nice pieces, but I'm gun shy now.

I don't your wife to think of me as a bad influence...any more than she already does! I like them, too, I'm pretty excited.

Yeah, I thought so too, Stephan. And that is a very generous offer, I think Jason should definitely take you up on that one!

Rockjunquie, JB weld is an epoxy. I make it about 1-2 mm thick and remove it on the flat lap. It can even be easily removed with a file.

I've used it for backing before, that's why I was wondering how you get it off. Would a 600 grit get it off? That's most coarse spin on flat disc that I have.

You definitely do not want to use anything to aggressive. 400 is ideal. 600 will work.

I won't touch it because of hearing some horror stories of it crumbling. This is a good tip to try. Thank you
