I like to play when making a cab and am attracted to the weird. An ebay seller has some frog skin listings. I never bought any before and know it is related to Tahoma. The seller had a botryoidal piece on auction for $3 so I bid on it and got it for the minimum. I bid on some regular frog skin slabs to combine shipping. The last time I bought a botryoidal piece was stinkingwater and it fell apart. I am curious how this piece will cab. Picture is from the listing. The piece of rough weighs 4oz.

Okay...I'm super interested to see what this ends up being like. Lately I've seen and have been curious about a ton of listings on eBay for Tahoma Jasper Frog Skin Agate. So, I'll be watching to see what magic you are able to do with this.

This is the parcel I bought. Looks more like regular Tahoma but seller has a listing of Tahoma. There were better parcels but this one had no bids and the auction was ending in the middle of the night. Middle piece has the most potential.

That's the same seller I've been seeing on there. The pics in all his auctions are very similar to that shot.

From what I understand it's all the same, just different "marketing " Nate suggested biscuit cutting it and you'll get a completely different look (frog) if you do

NDK - MsAliOkay, I googled a bunch of different things to try and figure out biscuit cutting in relation to this and can't find what it really means. So, here's a real "newbie" question, but in relation to that skinny one, what does biscuit cutting mean? Does it mean cutting slabs parallel to the flatter edge...so you're taking cuts similar to the "layers" of a biscuit? (Whatever the answer is going to be, biscuits and gravy sound really good right now!)

And biscuits and gravy always sound good Thanks Ali. I figured that was what it meant. But I could also see it being used to describe the action of "cutting biscuit shapes" - like a cookie cutter...which didn't make as much sense to me. Now I'm going to have to talk my wife into making biscuits and gravy tomorrow morning.

I am not familiar with the term biscuit cutting. Tahoma can be cut with the seam or across the seam. It is usually cut across the seam because the material is in layers and when grinding the appearance won't be good. Sometimes it produces a fantastic pattern. The exposed face is too narrow to work with so it needs to be cut down the middle with the seam and likely abandoned.

Picture 1 shows the across the seam and #2 shows the pattern it can have when biscuit cut (with the seam)

One of the best with the seam produced two cabs. This is one:

I cut the bottom flat with the trim saw and squared the edges. Most of it including the bottom is matrix. The center is a cavity and the size is 2x1. I'll do a little grinding and see if I can do anything with it. Two of the rough pieces will produce some nice small narrow cabs with the same face orientation. The other one needs to have the matrix ground off and I'll see if anything is there. Too thin for the saw to slab. Part of the fun is making something out of nothing and that is where I am starting.

I trimmed the botryoidal piece into two even wedge shapes. One fractured and the other was mainly matrix so no use. I slabbed the two other pieces and will get 4 freeform cabs. The other piece will be worked on when I grind, maybe tomorrow.

The largest one fractured. I ground the rough and there is no pattern. Final result is 3 preforms; one I haven't decided on the top and all the shapes need work.

I love seeing the progression on this, very interesting.

I ground two of them through 280 soft. One has a vug that is stubborn. Satisfied with shapes and pattern.

You sure do like a challenge. I would have never thought to cab the first photo. I can see the difficulty that might exist with trying to get a clean piece out of it that is not fractured.
I can't tell if the picture that Ali posted is from the lot that you purchased or not, but those are really pretty too.
