First up, Kambaba "jasper": DSC_2696_Kambaba "jasper" tongue by Stephan T., on Flickr Not a true jasper, or fossilized algae (which is often claimed), but an orbicular rhyolite from Madagascar. It's somewhat softer than most real jasper, but hard enough to take a decent polish. This one is definitely looking back at me. When turned sideways, there are two eyeballs and a nose. Starburst "jasper": DSC_2699_Starburst "jasper" free-form by Stephan T., on Flickr AKA Chrysanthemum "jasper" and spider "jasper". Once again, not a real jasper, but a rhyolite. Originates in Mexico. It's somewhat softer than most real jasper, but hard enough to take a decent polish. My favorite one -- small-orb Hornitos poppy jasper: DSC_2708 by Stephan T., on Flickr Some trim that might have been considered scrap with most other materials. Knowing how rare this is, though, not so much... The original slab was 1cm thick, so I have a 5mm dirdle -- suitable for groove-wrapping, should I ever get set up for it.

I have a hard time telling Hornitos from Guadalupe.

I have a hard time telling Hornitos from Guadalupe. Yes, that's very true. As a general trend, I've noticed that Hornitos tends to have more red-pink poppies on maroon, and Guadalupe more yellow and orange between the poppies. Not always true, I know. The poppies also tend to be subtly different, and I tend to see fewer fractures in the Hornitos material I've had in my hands. That said, all the Hornitos I've worked came from the same people (who live in mariposa County and dug it themselves), and I've only had scraps of Guadalupe mixed in with a crate of Morgan Hill stuff..

Nice poppy jasper! The starburst is actually rhyolite.

Nice poppy jasper! The starburst is actually rhyolite. Yep. I noted that in the description. That's why it's two "jaspers" and a jasper. Recently found out that Kambaba is also rhyolite (not fossilized algae, as it is usually marketed). And, thanks. I'm pleased with the PJ. Wish I had more of it. Especially now that I know it's OFFICIALLY mined-out old-stock.

I love them all Stephan! I have an affinity for the Kambaba. I've made one cab from a slab that I have...still have some left and look forward to working it again. I have a slab of the Starburst - I think that came from you. I haven't worked it yet. I had a note on it that said "soft"...so I've shied away from it up to this point. That HPJ is gorgeous!

Thanks, Jason. the starburst IS softer than typical jasper, but not as soft as I remembered it when I labelled the slab. Similar to the Kambaba... maybe a 6.5-7-ish. I thought I remembered being more like paintstone or cobra jasper, but it's not THAT soft.

I love the eyes in that Kambaba, but that poppy jasper is just too cool!
