When cutting preforms from a slab, I inspect for fractures and then use a heavy touch when using the trim saw. If the preform is going to fracture, I want to know right away. The same with grinding, heavy touch and coarse grit. I'm impatient. For soft or unfamiliar material, I cut as fast as possible while maintaining control. When things are moving to fast, I drop down to a finer grit.

That's where most of my fractures happen, with the trim saw... When they do, onto the tumbler they go...

My wife treats me the same way, for the same reason. I am now house broken, kinda. hehe
Your advise sounds good to me. Break it early to save on later disappointment.
