Hi all. I'm about to move some agates 'n stuff I got from Gaetz and Puppies to 600, and a particular stone that I was assuming was agate (local from Gaetz) just kinda self destructed. It's hard to tell from the pictures but these aren't just divots, but deep holes, some almost leaving the rock hollow. What's up with that? Heres the rest of the batch (dry) and they all are coming along great. Even some of the red colored stone came through OK. It wasn't this bad after 69/90, but 120/220 ate 'em up. Nothing powdery when I broke em up. Any ideas? cookie

Oh, and BTW, I start a part time job selling shoes (imagine that) tomrrow morning. At least I can keep busy and bring in some money while I'm looking for full time. Pay isn't too bad as I have so much experience. I also have 2 interviews next week and have had some inquiries from posting my resume on Monster.com. We will see!

What a bummer , those rocks getting eaten up like that. Must have softer areas in them that makes them go like that.
Pleased to hear you have got work again. Hope things are on the up and up for you.

Hi Cookie, My best guess looking atyou pic's is that the "holes" were softer material then the rest of the rock.I had the same thing happen quite a while ago and found that to be the problem.

I had that happen too. Sometimes the agates I find in Calif. have calcite associated and when you tumble them it just gets worn away leaving some nasty pits. Some of out agates are even geodes and you wear through the shell in the grits and find out you've got a hollow throwaway. Otherwise its back to the tumbler or the grinding wheel first to remove all those lousy pits.

yeh, Cookie, some of that Utah red/yellow jasper needs a lot of turning and some of it does just disintegrate. but isn't that part of the fun factor? i recharged some pet wood (going through a pet wood phase now too) today and had to go out and bash up some more to start.....that stuff is addicting. pet wood, i mean.
i got a junk mix out of a two week polish and was only somewhat disappointed. i did start a pure batch of Sodalite in Tin Ox, so i'm hoping to have a great batch coming up soon. i always (ALWAYS) forget about Tin Ox being so freaking thick and had to open the barrel back up after about 20 minutes to add more water........grr. hope i didn't shatter the batch.....

Cookie, That is real typical in some of the Southwest Agate I collected last year (NW New Mexico / SE Utah) and of some other light gray agate I bought from a fellow in Utah. It is near impossible to remove the Pitting from these rocks; it goes all the way through. csroc

Cookie-
Hey, I've had the same results with mine. I haven't been able to figure it out. I sent some to Sands and he slabbed some up and sent them back to me and some of those "pits" go throughout. I didn't mean to send you "defective" parts. I at least know where I got them and won't gather any more up. If you had a saw and some bigger pieces, you may be able to cut out the worm holes.
Oh, well we tried.
Good news about you getting a paycheck again. Congrats and good luck.
