Humanities main problem is that so much of what we know isn't true at all!
What IS an electron?How do they repulse other objects? We don't have a clue! We have made up photons. Do they really exist? I doubt it.
Imagine a quadrillion billiard balls jammed up to each other. Move one, and they must all move.
To my mind, THAT is electromagnetic movement- vibration, sound, light, infrared. etc.
Electrons appear to be the only basic particle we know anything about.
Protons? they appear to be composed of still unknown basic particles with temporary labels of quarks, gluons, etc.
How do protons attract across the universe - right up to very close when suddenly a "forbidden Zone" appears?
A proton attractive charge exactly balances one electron repulsion charge. How does that work?
Reasonable to me is that whatever protons are composed of, just inside its skin or shell must be a trapped electron that at close range repulses any incoming electron.
Neutrons are created as hydrogen atoms are being crushed into helium atoms. HOW?
One or more electrons must be pushed inside the skin of protons so they cancel out the charge - BUT the extra electrons running around inside the new helium molecule skin are bound together by the new electrons now trapped inside.

That info on the electron is shocking. since it is so round I am surprised it does not roll out of the socket and pile up on the floor. Maybe that is what happened in Texas when it got cold.

Not too far off. Positron EmissionI've always liked the idea of the standard model because it gave a more tangible explanation for what fields are and what gives particles their mass. Though wrapping your head around virtual particles is a problem too and the model has known issues. Trying to explain some of the standard model and quantum chromodynamics to collogues got me some weird looks like they'd never heard of it before, and this was during the graduate quantum I & II courses! So, kind of stuck with quantum field theory, wavefunctions, and all the other fun things like uncertainty, exclusion - please no not the harmonic/anharmonic oscillator problem again - Fine! But still, like a field is something we take for granted, like you just accept it... they pour the metal filings around the magnet and you see it... You ask for an explanation and they just point at the equations - fine - but - no, for real, WHAT is it? Never been satisfied with the answers. |

The standard model is a start but we still can't explain why: The mass of a Neutron = 1.674929 x 10-27 kg or 1.008664 u The Neutron is composed of: Two Down Quarks and One Up Quark Mass = (4.7MeV/C2)x2 + 2.2MeV/C2 = 11.6 MeV/C2 => 2.06828 x 10-29 The problem is that a Neutron is about 100x heavier than the sum of the components making it up. What are we missing? The Mass of a Up Quark is: 2.2MeV/C2 The Mass of a Down Quark is: 4.7MeV/C2 Gluons hold Quarks together: Types of Quarks: Each Quark has a matching antiquark. Up Quark: Mass = Approx 2.2MeV/C2 Down Quark: Mass = Approx 4.7MeV/C2 Strange Quark: Mass = Approx 96MeV/C2 Charm Quark: Mass = Approx 1.28GeV/C2 Top Quark: Mass = Approx 173.1GeV/C2 Bottom Quark: Mass = Approx 4.18GeV/C2

My Present Thinking:
Humanity got off on the wrong foot with electrons. We were aware of lightening long before noticing magnetism, and think about them as being separate things. There is no "electricity." There is no "magnetism." All there is is electromagnetism. You can't have one without the other. A magnetic field IS an electric field. They are not two sides of the same coin, THEY ARE THE SAME COIN.
What is an electron? What can we liken them to? They are kind of like stars continually radiating into space - BUT without gravitational attraction!
Electrons are the opposite of Black Holes, sucking material out of the previous universe into this one.
The "Big Bang" is still sucking material out of the previous universe into this one, still coming in through the ever expanding Event Horizon. Electrons are like pinholes, leaking internally into this universe!

Oh oh! I just trapped myself. NOW, WHAT IS A PROTON? It has to be the opposite of an electron! a tiny black hole sucking material OUT of this universe and back into the previous universe! How will I ever live this down? That is the great thing about NOT being a scientist. Nay-Sayers can't tear down my reputation because I don't have one.  |

I've always been curious. I meticulously took our alarm clock apart when I was four. As the only tool I had was a hammer we weren't able to put it back together. Magnets mystified me! My science teachers kept telling us there was no such thing as perpetual motion, but there were magnets holding on year after year. Simple. They are magnets.  So there I was for eighty years.Protons attract, electrons repel. Electrons are EMITTERS, protons are ABSORBERS. What are they emitting and absorbing? Where is it coming from? Electrons are "Cornucopias"? Where did everything else in our universe come from? The Big Bang! The only solution I can find is that electrons are emitting material from the same location (the Previous Universe), and protons are cycling the material right back again.  |
