About a month ago, I went hiking in the Bisti Wilderness south of Farmington, NM. It was a photography/solitude-seeking trip rather than a collecting trip, but I did see some interesting petrified wood. Of course, since this is a wilderness area, no collecting is allowed. The wood was drab and porous anyway, so it's probably best appreciated in its natural setting. There are also a lot of tan-colored calcite crystals scattered about and some dark rocks that contain veins of calcite. This area is full of fascinating rock formations and geological history. It's amazing to think that it used to be a rain forest, with dinosaurs roaming about and foraging. Today, of course it's a desert that supports only the hardiest plants and animals, which unlike their human guests are smart and stay well hidden during the heat of the day. I'm definitely planning a return trip. It's a great place to experience the rare and priceless commodities of solitude and silence and put life into perspective. Thanks for looking... - Robert Here's the petrified wood These "mushroom" formations were usually no more than around six feet high, but this one was a bit taller. This gives you an idea of how fragile the whole landscape is. This little guy was about a foot tall.

Wow, Gaetz, you are right. If I enhance Robert's photo just a bit, you can make out something odd Just kidding NMRockhound, great hoodoo pics (at least that's what we call those here). Nice petwood too. Interesting use of black and white, you don't see that too often anymore.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll post a few more pictures from my trip in a follow-on thread.
Stefan, no problem, I've been called worse things than "Susan" in my lifetime! The user id's "NMRockhound" (me) and "NMRocks" (Susan) are close, so the confusion is understandable.
