Well I have another thread going and a common theme was go ahead and buy Quality and get a Cabbing machine.. I was heasitant from a funding perspective but the seeds planted and have grown. I decided to look into it. I am now researching wheels for a possible cabbing machine (8 INCH).
I searched the old thread and gleaned what I could but as a newb may have gotten it wrong. I ask for you knowledge and opinons once more.
( T or F ) If I buy Sintered wheels I should get 60 and 180 (rather than the std 80 and 220 Plated) as sintered is less agressive due to being in matrix.
( T or F ) First two wheels should be hard wheels for material removal and shaping. Remaining wheels are soft for easier sanding/polishing
( T or F ) Cabber shaft is threaded for 1/4x28 on ends. Using Felt/Leather spin on pads with 14K and 30K Cerium Oxide is preferred for final polish
( T or F ) Go with Diamond and avoid SC wheels since they cup and produce abrasive sludge as they wear.
Going in comments. I am willing to spend money if it makes sense for a hobbyist who is not going to be driven by production. I am mainly going to be cabbing purchased (no slab saw yet) slabs from agate to the softer material.
The Lithuania seller has good wheels REZ that require some good breaking but price and shipping is good. I looked at the NOVA wheels and whew they are proud of them. INland Sintered I fell out of my chair. I also looked over Kingsley and jadecarver. Finally, found HANS and his exorbitant shipping price on sintered wheels (288.00 S&H) In the end I came up with these options.
Buy a set Option: CABKING WHEEL SET 8V1 from Kingsley (478.00)
Hard Wheel Options - A) Jadecarver Plated wheels in 80 & 220 (259.00). B) Kingsley North Heirloom Sintered Wheels in 80 & 220 (412.00) Lower Grits not available
Soft Wheel Options 280,600,1200,3000 A) DP NOVA Wheels (712.00) B) Kingsley North Diamond XTR Wheel ( 524.00) C) Set of REZ wheels from Lithuania (340.00) D) Eastwing Diamond Set (524.00) E) NoName set from Kinglsey (288.00)
I would really appreciate any input on name brands and quality. I am sure I missed some favorites so feel free to add to the list. In for a penny in for a pound I guess.
Thanks, Steven

The best price I found for my 80 sintered Inland was at Johnson Bros. I am more than happy with it.
T T not sure about how you worded this one T (my opinion)
I didn't like the REZ wheel I had AT ALL. But their 80 is really great.
I spring for DP Novas and try to get a good price. I really like them. Soft wheels need a good balance between give and stiffness. I think DP set the standard there.

1 have never purchased sintered 2 T I am using DP 60grit hex and 80 grit hex for rough out, use DP 220 for next wheel, will probably try an 180 grit next 3 oK mileage varies here. I don't like cerium 4 Diamond is more cost efficient than SiC now but you can take the grit off the SiC wheels and recycle in the tumbler.
I have had good results from DP/Nova wheels though I have a 280 grit nova that vibrates a little. I have had Kingsly North 8" no name wheels the 8000 was great the 3000 Sucked. It must have been square it had so much vibration. I used it for proof of concept and tossed it. I had it on the shelf too long before I used it so could not complaint to KN. there use to be a Discount guy on ebay that sold DP wheels. He seemed reliable.

rockjunquie I would like to here what you did not like about the REZ wheel. I was thinking about testing them next but don't want to waste $$ on them if they are not as good as DP Novas. any help would be appreciated.

Are the Cabking REZ wheels the same as the premium REZ wheels from that Baltic abrasives place?

I didn't get the premium wheel. It looked too vicious. My understanding, at the time, was that the only difference between premium and regular was the thickness of the diamond layer. I could be wrong. Anyway... I can't remember which wheel I got. 600 or 1200. It was very, very stiff. I want to say it had no give, but it may have had just a little. The surface was hard not rubbery like the Novas. It was LOUD! That was the clincher for me. It was just too loud to work with. I want to say it rang like a bell, but that would be wrong. Whatever it was, it was loud. It seemed to cut ok, but, to me, I just couldn't use it.
Speaking of noise- just throwing this out there. My 60 grit sintered is uber quiet compared to the 80 grit plated. I was pleasantly pleased by that.

Thanks for the info rockjunquie. I sent them an inquiry because they are not clear what the difference is between the two wheel types. The diff appears to be as you say thicker diamond layer and the fact that one is broken in to start and you have to break in the premium wheel.

Same exact experience with the rez wheel. I didn't even mount it. A soft wheel should be rubbery. The only thing I learned about soft wheels was that I was using the 220/280 too much.

I just noticed, you asked about the internal threads at the ends of the arbor shaft. All of the spin on discs that I have are 1/4" 20 TPI rather than 28.

Thank everyone for the great replies. At least I know I wasn't out in left field somewhere. Now to go searchign for the best price. Did a little googling today and found a post with a link to Novas for 100.00 each..... Then discovered that was a post from 2010. Now searching by last year time frame. Ohhh the disappointment.

oh it gets worse from here. burn baby burn! the way we keep our budget clean (stay married) is rock $$ pays back the loan so the rocks are self sufficient (originally any way). Now the grinders/supplies are from rock $$. The problem is when you get old there is not enough time left to pay it back so should I even buy it. I am sure I could come up with a million dollars worth of tools to buy if $$ was no object.
