I donβt want to mess this up. Have been marking some rough rocks for cutting/slicing when the weather warms up. How you determine the best orientation when slicing geodes/thundereggs? Most of those pictured are small enough to run through my trim saw. I am pretty sure these are all geodes, due to weight. Thank you

I am no expert, but have smashed, chiseled and cut a few. My best results were from crossing the centre (intersecting) as many of the bulbs that stick out as possible. Also, I try to cut lengthwise if the rock is longer than wider. Sometimes, you can get a hint of what it looks like inside if you put the rock onto a strong flashlight.

As for cutting thundereggs, this is the way to go.... www.zianet.com/geodekid/howtocut.htmAs for geodes, most have fracture points, I usually chisel them on the points of fracture.. Old saying also - A thunderegg can be a geode, but a geode can never be a thunderegg... There is a difference... Good luck and most importantly, have fun... Thumbs up...ππ

If it is already cracked, then break it there. On the other hand, I have never heard the old thunder egg saying. However, I heard somebody at a party say "Don't dump that bowl, there's still a thunder egg there". I understand that was referring to weed burned on the outside and green inside. ;-)

Geode means "earthlike". It bulges at the center. Tap on the equator.
Cut the same way.
