Morning all:
Well I am a newb and as such I have never been to a rock and mineral show. I would however like to go ohh and ahh over some rocks. Particularly would like shows that have good rough for cutting . I am in Destin FL and looking for shows within 8iish hour drive or around 600 miles. I would love to hit some in Mid West but loooong drive. I have been out on some promoter websites looking but the issue is I cannot tell if it is worth the drive most of the time.
So... I wanted to get your recommendations on good shows in the area that are "worth" the drive while I plan out some long weekend get aways. I would hate to drive 8 hours to get there and find is is a few tables in a parking lot.
Thanks for any suggestions, Steven

Thanks for the pointer. I did see the jacksonville and have it on the calendar. Have you been to it before? I am assuming it is a bigger show since it is in a larger city. That was problem with most listings is I can't tell if they are big shows or a local club with a few tables. steven

You could contact the Show Chair to get a list of vendors that will be there. Southeast Federation of Mineralogical Societies

All the shows in the Rock and Gem Magazine listing are club shows. Some of them can be very good. Do as amygdule suggested and contact them to get a list of vendors to help you decide whether they are worth your travel time to attend.
Our club show is pretty large and we have vendors that come from all over the West and a few from the East to be in it. You never know what you'll find at a club show.

Just to be clear. I am not knocking club shows at all. I was trying to say if I am going to drive 6-8 hours I prefer to attend larger shows and not get there to find only a few tables.

Totally understand. I wouldn't want to be spending my time and money driving that far to go to a dinky show either. That's why I agreed that getting vendor lists would be helpful in deciding if it would be worthwhile.
Plan on coming down to Quartzsite next winter and attending the RTH BBQ that Tony hosts during the Pow-Wow weekend. It's a blast getting to meet the folks you talk to on the board in person.

That may be my 'Big show of the year" since it would be a 27hour drive. Or I fly and figure out shipping back whatever I buy. Steven
