I am looking for great referance materials from rock identification to cabbing. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need to soak up this stuff like a sponge.

One of the best books for a beginner is the Rocks and Minerals Golden guide. No photos just drawings but a great starter book since the drawings capture what to look for and they have a section on gemstones. Keep in mind the study of rocks is petrology. Before you can take that at the university you usually need Mineralogy the study of minerals. These have some helpful overlap with Lapidary but not as much as you would think. Start with a local club or a forum like ******R T H******

When you're ready for some technical rock info, I think John Sinkakis' Gemstone and Mineral Data Book is a fabulous resource. Shop around - it's out of print so prices are all over the place.

If you're looking for a well-illustrated guide to gems (as well as a good discussion of relevant topics like rocks, basic gemology and more, I recommend the latest edition of Walter Schumann's "Gemstones of the World."
For cabbing (and much else) I think you'd benefit a lot from looking up a copy of John Sinkankas's "Gem Cutting - A Lapidary's Manual." Used copies in good condition are available for under $20.

Anything by Sinkakas is top notch. His GemStones Of America Vol. 1-3 will make you pack a bag, grab a shovel, and hit the highway.
