A friend of mine trade this donut for some necklaces and wraps that I made for her, to me it looks like real turquoise. She would like to know if it is worth much or not, because she found alot of stuff like this at an estate auction. Can someone help me identify? The picture doesn't really show all of the characteristics, for example the white "C" shape just looks white in the picture however in real life you can see the quartz go under the blue. Turquoise is so hard to id visually- But it looks real- try scratching the surface with your finger nail- alot of it is waxed or oiled to stabilize it- also you could try to do a specific graviety on it-

It has been polished so well that it had a very slick glassy surface on it so scratching the surface doesn't work. How do I do a specific graviety test on it? Tami

It is chinese turquoise, which is actually an agate. It is also dyed. I would be very suprised to find out that it is real turquoise.

of course, i had to look that up, haha, found an interesting thread about turquoise: www.cowboysindians.com/articles/archives/0797/turquoise.htmli got a catalog in the mail today, one of those mystical medicine stone numbers, showed some nice looking stuff called Athracen Butterstone or something like that...they wanted 19.95 for three little chunks (older than the dinosaurs, it touted, aren't we impressed?)...anyway, i looked it up, its common as muck, also know as African Jade, African Butter Jade, in fact it reminded me that (maybe) Banjo ran a bunch of this a while back, pretty stuff, too. it almost looked like the photos of the rough Imperial Jasper that Tami posted a while back. anyway, what i guess i started out to say is there are a lot of scammers out there and that you really need to do your research on materials or you can get majorly ripped off.
