I have read several topics about gas buildup in rotatory tumblers, but I seem to be experiencing the opposite situation. In many of my batches the bottom of my barrel (rubber) becomes concave, because of "negative pressure". I am not too worried about this because I just need to open the lid for air to get in and equalize pressure, but I am wondering if this is a normal occurrence. This photo is of the bottom of a small 2-lb barrel with petrified wood, after 5 days with 500-grit silicon carbide. Normally the bottom is flat. Is this normal?

Yes, that can be normal too. Preferable to me, so much so that I add hot water so that when it cools the pressure inside drops.
I'd rather have a barrel suctioned closed than ready to pop.

Very desirable. Barrel will not leak when the are sucked in like that. Once I learn how to post photos I will take a picture of my 12 Lb barrel as it is permaentaly caved in like that!
