Here's somewhat of a mongrel-mix, with a focus on confetti jasper. These went about a month in 60/90 (2-3 weeks for the confetti jasper as they were mostly smaller stones), then about a week in 120/220, 1.5 weeks in 500F, finished up with 2 weeks in CPP polish. First up, confetti jasper from Green's Lapidary (this looks to be some sort of brecciated jasper or breccia... pretty material, I just wish the pieces were larger. Some day I'll have to visit Green's (6-hour round-trip drive) and see if, among other things, I can't get some larger pieces of this). A bit closer: This is some unknown jasper (?) that I found locally: This is "rainbow quartzite". Well, as far as I know, there is no such thing, but it is some kind of quartzite that I found locally, and because it has a rainbow of colours I've taken the liberty of making up a name for it ;D This is hawkeye (blue tiger-eye) from the Rockshed. And here's a couple shots of amethyst/rose quartz from a local rock shop: That's it, thanks for looking!

Great job! .. That confetti Jasper is very striking, great shine on those...never heard of blue tigers eye before; they shine wonderfully. I really think the amethyst/ rose quartz is the most outstanding of all. csroc

Thanks everyone for the kind words! Cher, that is the only piece of rainbow quartzite I have ever found (it was a larger piece that I busted up). I have found all those colours individually in quartzite before, but never all mixed up in one chunk of quartzite like that. I'll certainly keep an eye out for more though. Stefan, I think those are mainly iron oxide impurities colouring the quartzite (could be other impurities also). I don't know why they came varied in one piece like that, but I'm glad they did. Alice, Next up?... I put some petrified wood in polish yesterday, so it should be ready in a couple of weeks, knock on wood ( bad pun!).

that unknown jasper looks an awful like some of the local rock we have around here. Are you sure it's Jasper?

Thanks again everyone.
Alice, no, I'm not at all sure that is jasper. I just called it that because I didn't know what else to call it ;D. If you've got a better idea about what it is, do tell!
On a completely different note, after using an Olympus D510 digital camera for the past 4 years (and being very happy with it -- the pics in this thread were taken with it), I just bought a new Canon Powershot S2 IS camera yesterday, at "Best Buy". Wow, technology has come a long way in just 4 years, particularly in the amazing (and somewhat bewildering) array of features offered. I think the new camera is going to be really cool, but it's definitely going to take some time for me to figure out how to use it to best advantage. For rock photos, the ability of super-macro mode to focus right down to touching the lens should make for some great close-ups...it definitely beats the 6 or 8-inch close-focus limit of the old camera. I'm certainly going to have to shrink down the 5 megapixel photos before posting though, particularly for our dial-up friends! New toy! ;D
