Cher: Lavic is one of the all time great collecting sites! Literally tons of good jasper, moss agate and some plume with no digging required at all. Only thing you have to do is choose your color. It comes in every color, pattern and tone you can imagine. The desert is literally paved with it! Most pieces are fist sized or smaller but some are huge. I still remember a huge (150# or so) hunk I left to go get help for retrieval and couldn't find it when I went back. Man, it had brecciated swirls in every color you can imagine! Still angry about losing that one! *L*

Maybe in my next life I'll have the brains to start doing this earlier and there'll still be some of that pretty red jasper left out there. What a bummer you lost out on that 150 pounder. I found a pretty nice piece of jasper this weekend, about tennis ball size, has some pretty nice red swirls in it. Don't know if I should whack it or put it in my "maybe I'll get a saw" pile.

Fish: Yup it seems we have hit some of the same places. Not hardly a place in the Southern Calif or Nevada deserts I haven't hit. Man, these gas prices are going to make it tough to do now though huh? My rockhound buddy from the Porterville club says the price is $3.25/gal or higher all over the central valley now. Guess it'll hit us soon!

That Lavic is mighty nice. It is one of the best yellow red combos I've ever seen, the faces look polished already! csroc

Sabre-
Those reds are really awesome. What do you tumble with, vibe or rotary? I've got some similar stuff I collected here in Utah, but haven't found the time to tumble it yet.
What is your recipe? Have you tumbled this stuff before? Can't wait to see the "afters".
Sorry to hear you lost the biggie.
Gaetz

Gaetz: I have several rotary's ( lortones) and a Mini-sonic that I use for tumbler cabs as it does not distort contours much. ( man that unit is loud though!). Not real fond of it. Normally I do four weeks in 60-90 with a couple of recharges, 10 days in 220, then prepolish for maybe 10 more and cerium for ten more. Depends on the shape I want. Think I'll try that five stage process some of you use though and add the 500 grit and smaller. I'm very impressed with the finish some of you get, esp that James. Man, he makes those rocks shine! Have tumbled this material before. Can sometimes be difficult due to vugs, hematite or pits that just seem to show up. Most shines up real fine though. Think I might go look for that big one that got away again this fall. Losing rocks happens all the time at that site as the place is a maze of ravines and washes *L*.....Mel

Mel, Your rhyolite will polish very nicely IF it is well agatized. I have finished some that I got at a local rockshop here in Albuqueruqe which they called "leopardskin rhyolite". The color was a pinkish-purple matrix surrounding white orbs with black eyes. And they came out very glassy and shiney. I would post pix but, I am at work now. cuervo

Mel the Rhyolite should take a good shine but I think I would give it its own barrel after course- The opalized wood I'm working on now is hard as all get out- but usually tthe opalized anything tends to run a bit softer- Can't wait to see the results- Oh and If you ever decide to start selling some of your goddies- well there are a few members here that would be interested!
