Hi, this is a just for fun thread but anyway, is it true that gifts you give people are usually rocks or not?

Sometimes. I really should, just to thin out the big pile of stuff I'm making and accumulating!

I started out sweetly giving gifts to my wife from the cabochons I was making ... then over time it became more like paying my tithes and offerings.

I have noticed that not everybody appreciates a nice rock. Some people are strange.

I know this is a bit too personal for a lighthearted thread but this reminds me of when my dad was alive - he didn't really have a clearly defined hobby BUT he was constantly tinkering with crap he would pick up at the local thrift stores. Think along the lines of buying an ugly vase or statue and drilling it out and making a lamp out of it. Sadly as he got older and sicker and he confined himself mostly to his room with his little work desk, any time someone came to the house they would happily get handed some bizarre creation and it became a bit of a joke in the family. My children growing up would avoid him as best they could because making eye contact meant you were probably taking home a broken pocket watch with antlers glued on it.
The reason I told this story is to say that I always think of this when someone new is looking at my rocks area and unless they are a known rock lover, I actively avoid offering anything because I know I'm going to get "the look..."

And now I bet everybody would love the antler pocket watch and a few more minutes with the man that made it.

My son in law's late father did Bob Ross paintings. The whole family has them proudly hanging in their homes.

I half-jokingly told my daughter she might end up with a box of rocks for Christmas. She said that would be awesome. She did get a box of rocks for Christmas and it was pretty awesome.

It took my former roommate 1.5 years to understand what I was doing and they weren't just regular rocks. Only then did he get a jar of pretty tumbled stones, and he thinks they're beautiful.

If you are a cook and your friend is a musician, you don't give him/her a violin or a cd, (they already have what they want and like), you know food and you give them a cook book or a nice meal. You gift from your strengths not to your recipient's expertise. I can pick a beautiful rock, and they can gift a wonderful something that they know about and understand how to buy and present. Yes, I gift rocks and feel that I have introduced hundreds of folks to a view of the earth that they had little appreciation of previously. A rock is forever, even if you lose it, maybe someone will find it in a hundred years and it will still shine and be appreciated.

Greetings and welcome from Scotland, the last rock type gift I received was back in 09 from the The Real Jack (Yorkshire). Click photo for larger photo.
