This is really frustrating. I suspect there must be dirt on the pin. The darn plate is stuck. I can move the plate a little bit (up and down or round and round), but cannot get any leverage to pull it up. I tried tapping the outside of the plate in various spots and that didn't work. I pull it up until it sticks and then push down again (and again and again) without getting it all the way off. Any tricks, other than make sure it is clean before attaching?

What about something like a gear puller? Remember, I've never even seen a flat lap in person so take my suggestion for what it's worth...

That might work if I had one. ;-)

Greig, sit the unit out in the cold and see if the metal shrinks enough to let go of it. If that doesn't help you might try saying the appropriate words to the machine... it may not help, but you might feel "better."

Pawn someone else to take it off or disconnect the pin

Update. I still cannot get the plate removed from the pin. I tried oil, cold, banging and prying. I gave up in frustration and will try again later tonight. I have to resolve soon as I have a half finished cab for this month's contest. Not that I expect to beat any of the existing entries...

Maybe squirt liquid propane on it to shrink it.

Or heat from the propane. That's how many folks break loose frozen metal components. There is no gear puller in civilian hands big enough for what I envision you are working with. Good luck with heat.

I have never tried it, but I've read where folks would use the heat trick to break free frozen stuff in their faceting machines. I think it was the dop frozen in the facet head. After applying heat, I believe they applied ice to shrink it back quickly and it would come loose.

greig could you post a picture? I have a good idea what you're trying to do but a picture may point out something that's being overlooked

Instead of pulling the plate up can you unbolt the motor and push the pin/motor through with a hammer and wooden dowel? Sounds like the grit or blockage is on top and bottom of plate/pin may be clear. Either way you would have gravity and the weight of motor helping you.

After much fussing, I got a wrench on the brass nut on the underside of the plate to loosen it off. This gave me a little bit of wiggle room under the brass hollow bolt on the top (that is on the pin). A thin pry bar fit into this space and I pried the bolt upwards. Once I had a bit more room, I did some prying with other tools until it was removed. Probably hurt the plate, but at least it is now off. I can see no reason for the troubles, so it probably was dirt that scraped off during the removal, but I want to look it over to make sure. I sure don't want this to happen again. Thanks for everybody's suggestions.

Given that Thor will probably require the sacrifice of a thunderegg, maybe you can start with these guys: If Michael generates the bill, be sure to verify the proper location of the decimal point, though.

Mom always said to "keep my little pin clean". The best I can figure out what happened here is I left the machine with the diamond disk attached for a few days and the dirt underneath hardened concrete-like. Going forward, I will remove the disk and clean the pin before calling it quits for the night.
