Greetings to everyone,
I have always liked the thought of finding and polishing rocks, but have never done it YET. Over the last little while I was helping a friend move some stuff and came across a few containers of rocks he had done years ago, and they were so NICE. Got me wanting to do my own more and more.
I have a little homemade rock polish I got about 7 or 8 years ago, and I dug it out of the basement...now what? hahaha
Where do I buy the grit etc from? (I live in BC Canada) so am hoping to be able to buy some close. What are so good websites "rock tumbling for dumbies?" Can I just collect rocks out of the river next to my house and use them? Can the rocks be mixed together while tumbling?
Oh I could go on and on with questions. An help is greatly appreicated.
Bunny

Hi Bunny , Welcome on board the rocky rollers.
May I suggest that you look up rockhound clubs in Canada?
I am sure they can give you the information as to where to buy your grits etc. That's more or less how I started here in NZ and I found all of them extremely helpfull.
Good luck
Jack

Yahoo! Another Canuckian joins the board. I'm a transplanted Saskatchewanian now in the US. Here's a list of rockhound clubs in BC. I'd suggest trying them first. I was also going to recommend talking to rolingstone but I see he beat me to it! www.canadianrockhound.com/clubs/bc.html

Hi Bunny, I have been doing this for about 10 months or so now, my tumblers have proliferated from one barrel to 6 barrels and a vibe...I didn't know what I was doing either, and just looked at bunches of websites, finally decided the best starter for me would be the 3lb. Lortone starter kit that includes the grits. That worked out just fine. Later when I found this board and had done more reading I started ordering grits and different polishes and stuff. BTW it isn't absolutely essential to have a dedicated polish barrel, though it makes things easire. I did lots of rocks using one barrel and they came out fine, I just cleaned it obsessively before the polish run. If I had it to do over, I'd have bought the lortone model with 2 3-lb barrels to start with, since I found myself upgrading to the 2 barreler pretty quickly just because I wanted to be able to run more rocks. It takes care of the extra barrel for polish issue, too. If your river rocks are pretty they will be pretty when they tumble. Go for it!

Hi Bunny, Get some goggles and a rain coat, take that sigle barrel to the car wash between grits and pressure wash it! Did that when I got my first wet shiney batch. Now I have seperate bowls (I use a vibe) but they wear out fast. Welcome to this wonderful site and good luck. Hope you have a digital cam, these rock hounds are brutal about pics cookie

HI Bunny! I'm a newbie too. Just put my first batch or rocks in my twin barrel 3 lb'ers on Tue. Have to keep fighting the urge to open them up and check them twice a day. Today I found slurry and had to recharge the grit. I was so excited, something is happening in there!!!!! (hehe what a geek this hobby will make of me!) Anyway, we'll be newbies togther. The people on the board are so great and helpful. Lerned more here than in any book or other place on the net. I love these guys already, and I am sure you will too. Good Luck to you, Evelyn
