Hi all. It's been a hectic week for me and my wife. An old friend of my wife had an operation to remove some cancer tumors so I've made 3 trips up to the wine country this week and today we finally got a chance to go do some rockhounding. Picked up alot of interesting rocks of which I'll take pics of tomorrow. These are just a few shots of the area and the collecting site. One of the places we stopped we noticed this tree with a bunch of holes in it, went and checked it out closer and this is what we found and this is what was responsible for all the holes Just about every hole has got an acorn in it. Never saw anything like it before, but thought it was pretty cool. I'm tired of driving(about 325 miles each trip) so I think I'll do my rockhounding on the internet for a while. Ed

Wow Stoner, great pics. That's some beautiful countryside, something I've never seen. I've never had the opportunity to visit California.
What you found there is an Acorn Woodpecker. They drill holes in trees and telephone poles and stash acorns for their winter food supply. That's so cool, another thing I never would have seen since they only visit the southwestern part of the United States.
Thanks Stoner, appreciate the trip out west. Hope all goes well for your wifes friend.

stoner i've never seen anything like that before either. does it kill the trees when he does that? do squirrels let him do their work for them? that is unbelievable. i'm glad i don't have one of those peckers though. if the woodpecker hadn't showed up, would you have known what caused that?
i got so excited about the woodpecker i almost missed the rocks lol. what did you find?

Great pics Stoner. If you think that pine tree the Acorn Woody's are using for a larder looks holey, you ought to see the side of my ranch house. So many patches you can't see the siding *L*. Have to patch and repaint yearly because of the activities of a family of those birdies! If you were in the Napa Wine Country and have any sort of access to streams around Pope Valley, there are fine jaspers (poppy and brecciated) to be found in the area. Tons of arrow heads etc too....mel

those are amazing photos! i've never heard of an Acorn Woodpecker, that is astounding behavior! i'll bet it CAN get annoying if they pick you house to store their food supply!! poor Sabre!
great pics, Stoner, hope your friend is OK,

That is soooo cool. I actualy have seen that before. A woodpecker spent a lot of time pecking holes in a circular, downward spiral around a tree where I used to work. I would sit on a bench during breaks and watcch him do it, I thought he was looking for bugs. Then the holes started filling in with acorns. Amazing to see!

Just don't stand still too long or that woodpecker will think you're a tree! And I really wouldn't advise bending over!! Joe
