Did you get a lot of dust, or have you found a way to keep the stone wet while cutting?

Did you get a lot of dust, or have you found a way to keep the stone wet while cutting? You would be surprised. I set up this very cunning water system. My boys take turns using a squirt bottle to keep the rock wet. It was going all so well until the dremel died. So now it is charging. I did manage to cut halfway through the rock before it ran out of power. With Scotty on vacation I could not get more power without plugging it in.

I met a guy last year using one of those little rechargeables. I was looking at a nice apatite crystal in calcite, that I didn't want to break using a hammer/chisel. He cut a rectangle in the calcite around it in no time. I was impressed. Except he still broke the apatite when trying to get the bottom of the block out. Pretty handy little units.

I thought this was going to have a different ending with you ending up all wet when they got tired of squirting the rock! Good use of your assistants!

I started with a rechargeable dremel and ended up throwing it in the trash. Switch to a corded one, you'll be much happier!

I have both types. Each has its merits.

My first was a cordless. Now I have 10 or 12 Foredoms. Amazing how this works.

Yes started with a rechargeable. Then went to a Dremel and a flex shaft. Then while cleaning out my wife's grandparents house I found a DUMORE flex shaft (think Foredom on steroids) from the 1960s. It is amazing how this addiction works!

stefan I used a dumore flex shaft with a reciprocating handpiece that was a jewelers file holder when I was doing tool and die work. Definitely industrial stuff.

Nice cut! Rockoonz my wife's grandfather was a machinist and had a business in his basement (he made precise pressure gauges for the steel mill industry) When he died nobody in the family wanted his equipment. I grabbed 3 Buffalo Forge drill presses (purchased in the 1940's With no damage to the cast iron tables!) the Dumore flex shaft, a small high speed tapping drill press, a couple drill arbors that were used to triple drill fittings, a very old Delta pedestal 2 wheel grinder, and a few odds and ends. I wanted the metal lathe but it was sold off to a college shop as was a few other specialized tools. It was an amazing score for me as there were 4 sons and grandsons ahead of me for the goodies. My only wish was that he was into lapidary rather than machining!

The final result with my first cut. That’s an interesting pattern with the banding along the edges. Is there more banding in the interior? Will you be tumbling it, cabbing it, or simply admiring it now?

Will you be tumbling it, cabbing it, or simply admiring it now? Not much banding other than what you see. I have others that Jason and I cut in half. I may tumble them later. Never really thought to cab a bot.
