The Gulf of Mexico has never looked right to me. It just doesn't belong. How did it get there? Present Day Thinking . . . It has always been there? WHY are the deepest places along the thrust fault from Texas? It looks like Jurassic rocks were laid down level like most other Jurassic rocks, then they got shoved down and rocks from the northwest were thrust on top of them. It Just Don't Look Right to Me!

This does a good job of showing it happening, but gives no explanation as to why the area sunk.

1000's of beautiful mermaids fanned out the gulf with their tail fins 1dave. Some say it was formed by a comet impact. It does appear to have a similar shape to an impact site. Check out the vertical drop at the end of the red line. Some of the best fishing in the world often accessed from Destin/Pt. St. Joe/Indian Pass. That is a serious wall. 1500 meters/1.1 miles ! Similar wall north of Yucatan.
