Mel, You're killing me! You have the coolest rocks. How cool? Last night while I was at work, I spent about an hour trying to figure the cheapest and fastest way to Barstow. I can honestly say that before seeing some of your pix, that thought had never entered my mind. Now, it's setting up to be a quest. I'm thinking cheap flight Vegas, rent a car and drive to Barstow. Wonder if I can do it before the wife notices I'm gone. matt

Matt: You wouldn't even have to drive clear to Barstow. The main turn off for the north Cadys is Basin Road which is 45 miles ne of Barstow on Hwy 15, the main road to Vegas. Of course the main collecting area is about an hour of tough four wheeling south of the turnoff. definately an October through April trip too. Very hot hard country out there some of the year.

Plan B is to find a conference in Vegas or LA or Bakersfield (grin) and convince my bosses to send me. Tack on an extra couple days and, voila, rock heaven. Of course, the company already has announced cutbacks. Maybe next year. matt

Sabre-
Thanks for sharing those neat photos. It really is fun to see the really neat stuff we all have in our gardens, cupboards, garages, safes, shoeboxes, etc.
Great stuff. You may have said this in an earlier post, but where do you live in relation to Barstow? Do you frequent this area often?
Thanks again,
Gaeter
PS.......when are you gonna convince wifey to allow you to put a saw thru the middle of that sweet plume agate? LOL

Gaeter: Actually Ojai is a small resort town near the Calif. coast. The Cady Mountains are about five hours away but an easy drive if I leave early and beat the friggin LA traffic. I usually manage a trip out there maybe three times a year. I've been going for almost 45 years so really know the area well. Almost like my backyard but still get kinda lost at least once a year because the area is a maze of canyons, hanging falls, badlands etc. Incredible amount of neat material is available there. I'm always amazed when I hike up some canyon and find huge veins of plume and moss agate just weathering from the rhyolite. Finding the place a second time can be difficult though due to all the flash flooding and collapsing of canyon walls. Few years ago a one of my buddies brought back some fantastic red moss from a vein he found which was four feet thick. We hiked miles with sledges and other heavy tools year before last and never could refind that dern ledge of agate. Very frustrating but then the treasure hunting is most of the fun!
Oh, and as to cutting any of my big boulders. Reckon that depends on which of us outlives the other! *LOL* Like the wife says. " You got a mountain of smaller stuff to cut anyway!"..mel

So that's just laying out in your garden, is it? Er, just out of curiousity, what's your exact address please? ;D
Great stuff, it's like you have your own rock store right in your house.

Hey Sabre-
Why don't you purchase a little GPS? You could probably sell a couple of your hunks of stuff....that may just pay for itself!!!
I'm going to buy a GPS tomorrow. I can't wait. I'll be able to mark my fishing holes and then find them in the next months when the fog starts to roll in. I'll also mark my rock spots and then I'll be able to post them for fellow rockers who want to visit those spots too.
Anyway, just a thought. I know, it's just one more tool that requires money, time, effort!!!!! LOL,
Gaetz

Gaetz: I've thought about a GPS but decided it would spoil the fun. Heck I make some of my best finds while trying to find my way down off a ridge or figure out where I parked the dern car. I like mother nature to surprise me!
