After 4 years of great service, my 2.1 megapixel Olympus D510 camera is showing its age, so a few days ago I replaced it with a 5 megapixel Canon Powershot S2 IS. What a bewildering array of options... you can modify just about anything you can think of, this is going to take time to figure out. Have to play with it to learn the controls, but here's some of my first shots. First, this is a shot of ocean jasper taken with the old Olympus camera, that I had posted a couple weeks ago. This was near closest focus on the old camera: Looking at the same stone in the centre of the pic using the new Canon in "super-macro" mode, I can easily get closer: With 5 megapixels to play with, I can digitally magnify the image quite a bit for closer views (sorry about the dust speck): And to go ridiculously close for an alien like view of a small part of that same piece of OJ: Well, that might have limited usefullness up that close, but I thought it was cool anyway.

Nice shots RS. You're gonna love playing with the new camera. I've had mine for about 3 months, and I'm still learning new things with it.
Have fun,
Ed

Thanks for the replies everyone!
Now that I've had a couple more days to browse the camera's manual, I'm coming to the conclusion that the manual suffers a bit in the translation from Japanese. I've found one very glaring error, and several other things that are at best iffy. On the plus side, the internal camera menu-screen directions (available in 21 different languages) appear to be very straightforward once the user (me) becomes adept at using the basic camera functions, and they don't seem to suffer from language translation problems, at least as far as I've seen so far.... which of course means reviewing only one language (English) out of the 21...
I hope to experiment with more pics soon. I just need this rainy/cloudy/dull weather to go away so I can actually get some decent light for pictures.
Highly patterned stones will of course make for the best close-up pics, so I'd better get to tumbling more agates and jaspers. Well, after some initial playtime, I suspect the super-macro feature will be used only occasionally, but it should always be a handy feature to have around for when I do polish a batch of strongly-patterned stones.
To Joe, sorry, but the old camera has already had dibs put on it by my daughter and her pals, plus I see myself taking it on somewhat camera-risky outings... the beach, fishing trips, etc.
Tweetie, LMAO! ... thanks!

That is way too cool. My parents just got a new digital camera so I got their old digital camera. My dad was reading through the instructions on their new camera and finally had to quite because he couldn't use some of the functions as he was going through them. Tami
