Wow, hard to believe but a couple of nights ago I had a batch or two with 3 kinds of tiger eye in it complete polish week 1. First, the 6 pieces, and I'll explain what happens next. Only 2 will go on to polish week 2 The piece of red that shows a problem that often never goes away. Turn back to 600 or 1,000. Here are two pieces of gold, that are perfect, except for a small hole in each. I suppose some wouldn't care, but I don't let these continue, so back to 600 or 1,000. This can become frustrating, because you can have a rock that is this close to perfection, go back to a larger grit, and open up even MORE problems. That's happened more times than I can count and just comes with the territory. Now here's one a very pretty piece, that I like a lot because it has a completely transparent layer (quartz?) that you probably can't see in the photo. This layer is about 1/8" thick. That silvery hematite floats on top of it like an island. The rock is darn near perfect and ready for polish week 2, but, during week 1, you can see the problems that happened on one edge. This this too has to go back.

Oddly, these two blue pieces came out pretty decent. However, there is a slight grainyness to the fibers in some places, and from past experience, these will not come out of polish week 2 well, but I'm going to try.

The quartz page has a good discussion of tiger (yellow) and hawkseye (blue). The latter is has the asbestos fibers partially silicified, whereas in the former the fibers are completely replaced by quartz. Reportedly they do occur together suggesting that the blue is an intermediate step toward tiger eye. So for me your variegated is a combination of the two but I like the blue for its less garish tones. Thanks! I just read that page, which is very interesting. The partial silicification you mention on the blue, may go far in explaining why I've never yet got a single piece come out great through polish. I had some in polish recently, and even though starting they looked pretty good, after week 1 at least one corner on every piece had "frosting" of fibers which I suspect upon magnification would show loose fibers or fibers not completely adhered to each other.
