I found this rock yesterday in a corner of my work table and proceeded to cut it on my tile saw. I don't remember where exactly it's from, but it's probably from a beach in San Mateo county, California. Is it petrified wood?

It's hard to tell - this white vein and yellow part are confusing. If I have to guess I would say that it isn't petrified wood, but as I say it's hard to tell.

I haven't cut any petrified wood before that I can recall. I take it that white veins and yellow are uncommon. The yellow definitely looks and feels like jasper to me. Are there ways to tell with say a low magnification microscope?

I am not much help when it comes to identification, but petrified wood can come in many colors, which are determined by the elements and minerals present during formation. Pretty much any color in the rainbow can be present. I was just looking for information about colors in petrified wood the other day and found quite a bit of information, some of it contradictory, so I won’t link anything here and unintentionally mislead anyone.
I love petrified wood, but unless it actually looks like wood, I struggle to identify it as such. It’s certainly pretty!

It could easily be pet wood,... or not. The best clue will probably be if pet wood is common in the area it came from.

I haven’t collected in SM County., but I’ve certainly found pet wood on NorCal beaches. I’d guess jasper, though.
