So, I find myself wanting to get a lapidary trim saw. I have an old Gem Trim for small material, but I have a need to cut larger pieces of rocks. I’m looking at the 6” Rock Rascal Model J, or Rock Rascal 6” Combination Gem Maker. Can anyone tell me the maximum depth of cut? Is there a difference of maximum depth of cut between Model T or Model J? Both machines look to be a good investment.
I’m using a vintage Sapphire Faceting machine as a flat lap right now for all my cabbing, but I find the combination machine appealing as an alternative. It would be a bit more expensive than the other model, but if it’s worth it I will spring for it.
I’m thinking of ordering from Kingsley North, because I’ve seen previous posts about dealing with Johnson Bros directly leaves a lot to be desired. Any guidance or advice is welcome and appreciated. Do you own one of these? Are you happy with it?
Thanks, Van

What about the Hi-Tech 10” Trim Saw? Does anyone out there have any feedback you can share on that model. It’s a bit more pricey, but I am looking for something that will last. I thought about Highland Park as well, but every time I check the website they are out of stock. Are they even making anymore in the production line?

If you want to cut rocks by hand any 6, 8 or 10" saw will accomplish the deed but a raytech 10" ; hp 10"; or just about any lapidary saw bigger than 6" will do better. Used is almost always cheaper but there is the search. No idea where you are in tx but search tempest shows a few optons in the dfw region. Riverbend lapidary often has used stuff. If it sounds like I'm waving you off of the hitech, I probably am. For the price you can do better. Just my bias.

Thanks Tom for the info. I will look into Riverbend Lapidary. I’m starting to lean towards Highland Park 6”. Any thoughts on that one? Lapidary Dave on YouTube has a great video showing him using, and ‘abusing it’ in his words. The models look really well made and easy to care for.
