Finally had some time after several weekends of excessive honey-dos. There are several from material I obtained from jasoninsd (thanks!): Prairie agate free form (this stuff is incredibly hard -- went back three times to get most of the scratches out). I love the speckles in the quartz... it looks carbonated: DSC_3595_Prairie agate freeform by Stephan T., on Flickr Re-post of the Crazy lace (Temporary ETA, until I figure it out: either Flor de Durazno claim, or Flor de Durazno lace agate) — see above, re hardness. Spectacular patterns: : DSC_3600_Crazy lace free-form by Stephan T., on Flickr Some cool Picasso marble. A welcome break from working stuff in the high 7s mohs (if not 8). The patterns remind me of clothing from the 80s: DSC_3610_Picasso marble freeform by Stephan T., on Flickr (There's one more of these I made, but haven't photographed yet). Mining the old preforms: An interesting item (one-off slablet) from the MHPJ box. Would almost say it's birds-eye rhyolite, except for the red circles around the orbs. Could go either way, I suppose: DSC_3603_Poppy jasper preform by Stephan T., on Flickr Some CRS jasp-agate (in other words, I don't remember): DSC_3608_Unknown jasp-agate shield by Stephan T., on Flickr An MHPJ rock recently cut by a friend. A 6"x4"x3" stone turned into 7 slablets (1-2 cabs each). The rest could probably be used as extra-coarse grit. Nature of the beast. The slabs that were obtained have some gorgeous, unusual colors: DSC_3598_Unusual Morgan Hill poppy jasper by Stephan T., on Flickr

Way to get some time on the cabbing machine Stephan! That Prairie Agate turned out great! I never wanted to claim some of that really does feel like it's in the 8s on the Mohs - so I'm glad to hear someone else thinks it might be as well! I think working those as well as the different Laguna Lace I have been lately has seriously dulled my 80 grit wheel! LOL I think I might have to turn my collar up in honor of that Picasso Marble! Love the Poppy Jaspers...and the CRS Jasp/Agate is gorgeous as well.

I like that carbonation in the prairie agate!
Those poppy jaspers (1st in particular) sure are pretty, too. Great batch all around.

Remember, too, the Mohs scale is ordinal, so there are no actual, physical standards connected to it. I haven't worked Topaz, but if it is substantially harder than quartz, I'll call it "7.5 to 8-ish." Turned-up collar, skinny tie, listening to a hair band... you have options

Hey I've got a correction for you. That second cab down, that I probably told you was Crazy Lace, is actually Flor de Durazno Lace Agate...or at least that's what I was told it was when I bought the rough. I was digging through some bags of slabs and the sister pieces to your slab were in the Flor de Durazno bag...

I assumed that Flor de Durazno is a subtype of Crazy Lace. Also, remember... the cats disagreed with my slab filing system and made some changes.

Don't listen to those cats, they lie for a living.

LOL That’s kind of where I was coming from, but I’ll narrow it to Chihuahua. I recall there was a thread not too long ago (by Sabre52?) that detailed a bunch of sub-types. If I find some time maybe I’ll dig for it, unless one of our resident thread-hounds beats me to it.

A corollary to that theorem is that any blue and brown jasper from Oregon is a sub-type of Owyhee.

I love 'em Stephan! I bet there's gonna be plenty of room for some more Prairie Agates in the box going to CA. I just dopped a couple Prairie Agates that I'm a little excited to see how they turn out. Most of the Prairie Agates I've worked so far, seem to have a high propensity for a great shine to them. Once you can get past the initial shaping grind, they're not so bad! LOL
