Not at all what I was expecting when I saw "Jadeite" in the title. This looks really cool Stephan!

Inspired by the soggy weather, and the apparent popularity of mushroom-themed items at our local crafts market, I decided to try something a little different. The shape was accomplished by adding the stem to a tongue shape. Getting into the corners was a little tricky on Genie wheels (I think a Dremel or a Flex-shaft would be useful here), but it worked. The starburst jasper undercut slightly in the starbursts, which isn't something that I've seen previously. Could be the bald wheels creating extra drag, or the fact that I'm using a squirt bottle to keep the wheels wet. DSC_0986_Something a little different by Stephan T., on Flickr Overall, I'm pretty pleased for a first attempt. ETA: The small one actually has a "half dome," and then it drops down a bit vertically to the stem. Just barely. though, maybe half a millimeter. I'd like to play around with that a bit more for the next one, but I'll have to stick to the small mushroom style. Couldn't do it on the bigger one without cutting a gouge on the edge of the next wheel. If I can track down a scrap of mushroom rhyolite, that'll be so meta I'll amuse myself for days.

I freakin' love these! I can't imagine these wouldn't be a big hit in some of the shops down there! You need to get that water supply fixed! LOL

Like I said, I consider it a valiant first attempt, and there were some lessons learned. I'd even go as far as saying I like the smaller one. A boat-load of work that people probably won't be willing to drop extra cash on, but fun. I'm dying to try this with some crazy lace and some small-orb Hornitos. It partially makes up for the fact that I dropped my entry into holajonathan's contest. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for a second attempt this coming weekend. As for the water supply... I know... jonathan even sent me some links for aquarium pumps, but for various reasons, I haven't managed to pull the trigger. Life is kind of nuts and overwhelming.

Ha ha, not that kind of mushroom. They have really skinny stems that would be difficult. The small is based on the basic grocery store crimini. The bigger one is a shaggy mane ink cap.
If I do a crazy lace, that will be trippy, though. 😁
Thanks

stephan I think your 'shrooms are so cute! What material is that little one? When I first saw it, I thought it was a fire agate.

stephanIf there's a market anywhere for mushroom cabs, it's in California. Cool idea, by the way. Here is some fungal inspiration from my firewood pile. Been meaning to share these with you. I know you like fungus. Or Oregon — where “silly-cybin” is actually legal. Cool logs. Not sure I could make those cabs anytime soon. Love the purple one.
