My Covington 16 brutalizes rocks, the HP tickles them. I have to baby sit the Covington in case it jams. The HP is slow but I can go play on line poker without worry while it cuts. I started with a smaller piece of Morgan Hill rough that was already glued to a board. The online instructions say 6 turns to a quarter inch. My first cut was a potato chip. Not a problem so I adjusted accordingly. The first correct cut was full of fractures so I went on to the next piece. The vise does a good job holding small wedge shaped pieces. I cut a slab off another Morgan Hill piece and it didn't have much of a pattern. The last piece was the smallest and I can make two cabs. I had an 11 pound piece of Mookaite that I cut off some pieces so it would fit in the Covington vise better. I cut two slabs off a smaller piece with the HP.

Glad it is working out well after the frustrating start! It looks like it is cutting smoothly!

I had a very interesting discussion with the head of Highland Park. I said that I liked the vertical vise and he replied that it was very good for cutting agates, particularly Montana. I bought some Montana nodules some time ago, studied them, marked the cutting orientation and glued them to some boards. Typically, my Covington was broken, so I put them in a box for later. I found 3 nodules, one of which had a cut orientation marked. I faced and cut a slab the unmarked ones and there was no pattern as expected. I got this slab from the marked one. The vise did a great job on small irregular agates. This slab from an unmarked piece could be described as mock turtleback.

Can you show pics of how you glue to boards? I have seen some where they glue after the initial end slice. They glue the board to the flat face, However, it sounds like you are gluing the rough rock to the board before any cuts. With the irregular nature of the rocks I am curious how that is done.

My normal method is to cut a face and glue it to a board. For small rough and a large saw, I might have to glue the flattest surface to a board when I can't make a facing cut. I believe I glued to the Montana nodules using the flattest. All the Montana cutting I did today was a facing cut and the first slice using the vertical vise.
