Hello! I'm pretty new to rock tumbling, but I'm a "lifer" for rockhounding. I've lived in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas, and now I live in southern Missouri (which is incredible for rockhounding, IMO). I had the usual toy tumbler when I was a kid; but my DH got me a Thumler's model B tumbler for Valentine's Day this year. I guess he was tired of me stacking "rock collections" by trees in our back yard, LOL. My first tumbled batch had mixed results I think because I didn't load the barrel enough, and I don't think I left the rocks in Coarse long enough. But I did get some lovely rocks from it, so I'm definitely hooked! I regularly rockhound my 3/4 acre backyard and find colorful chert, a bit of red jasper, and tons of chert nodules in the drainage ditches beside the road. All fun to tumble. I also find lots of tiny crinoid stem fossils. I relate to everyone that checks out landscape rocks, because I have found some nice agates in my friends' and family's landscape "mulch rocks". I'm looking forward to meeting everyone because I have NO rockhounding friends at all here. And I also hope to learn more about rock identification - is there a forum for that here?

Hey Erica! Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! We have tons of hounding areas out here...and I am out there as much as possible! I also went so far as to have 21 tons of river rock delivered to the house for landscaping projects! It's been fun picking through the rocks just around my house too - I've even found Fairburn Agates and Teepee Canyon Agates in those 21 tons! Under "Additional Rock Related Topics", there's a subforum for "Rock Identification Help": forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/board/18/rock-identification-helpEDIT: Randy ( RWA3006) typed faster than I did! LOL

Thanks for the welcome, everyone; and thanks for the link,RWA3006 . I don't know how I missed that in the forum list. Everyone looks like they are from some great rockhounding states! The Dakotas and Michigan are states I would especially like to rockhound. Lucky!

(Although technically, Pennsylvania may have some decent rocks but not anywhere near here!)

Greetings from Vermont, where all the rocks are grey or green (I think!). It's been snowing here for 2 days. Just when you thought it was safe to go rock-hounding, everything is covered up again. I like cherts and crinoids too.

Thanks for the welcome! Lookatthat , we don't have ANY green rocks that I know of around here; so that sounds pretty cool!

Cherts and flints are a variable as anything so enjoy the bounty. Believe it or not we sometimes get tired of red in New Mexico. Thats why we share specimens with others. Show us your progress and ask lots of questions.
