These agates have been tumbled forever. My grandson had gotten one of those Nat'l Geographic tumblers, plastic barrel etc so my daughter gave him a bunch of agates to tumble. They went through all the stages and they were awful, no shine, grit literally embedded in the quartz, never saw anything like it. This was with washing between loads, everything, it was sad. So Grandma took 'em home and ran them again ... Full load Lake Superior Agates Banjo's green quartz and some misc local stuff. 2 weeks coarse 1 week 120/200 1 week 500 1 week AO 1,000 5 days Cerium / 5 days AO polish Thanks for looking, Cher

They are quite shiny...Love the supereior agate... Intuitively I'd think the Green Quartz is left and the Green rock on the right is something else csroc

Yes it is CS, the darker green stuff is more of that chunk I had in my last batch post, still think it's some kind of jasper but not sure.

Yes Kim, there's a couple of pieces of amethyst in there, along with a few idon'tknowites. Those two pieces on the bottom of the last pic, black and yellow, totally awesome. The yellow is swirled and streaked through the black. I should have scanned them for a close up.

What a neat rock Cher yep, you're gonna see step by step pictures with my batch. I got a mix of jaspers, agates, and who-knows-ites - rocks which hubby brought back from Iraq... just a mix of anything and everything. I'm still kind of undecided whether I should use tripoli, 1000 AO, or 1200 AO. Guess I'll decide tomorrow

Great eye candy Cher. Only 2 weeks in coarse?? That sounds like the tumbler instructions. Mine wind up in coarse for 5, 6, 8 weeks and they are still "not right". Oh well... Joe

I know the feeling Joe. I have a barrel of just agates that are going on 17 weeks of coarse. Of course I keep pulling some out, and adding more rough. but it's taking foever to get a barrel full to bring to the next stage.

Well Alice, maybe Cher has some special "Godlike" powers that go along with all those stars! When you get that many, let me know if you feel different or get polishing powers beyond compare. Or is it a secret club?... Joe

That must be it! it's a secret club where they share secret info on how to get perfectly shaped and polished rocks. James must be their "leader".
So how do you join this secret club Cher?

Hahahahaha .... nope, no secret club but that would be ... nah, j/k. Honestly I would have tumbled them (the agates) longer but my daughter didn't want them to entirely lose their shape so the pits and minor flaws were allowed. She also didn't want them to lose too much of their size. Remember, they had been tumbling in my grandson's little tumbler for 4 weeks prior to my taking them so they did get some shaping there.
I am really fussy about what I move on to the next stage though and inspect each stone before it ever sees the 500 grit. Any little marks I don't like and it goes back to coarse or in the dremel box. Normally I would have just run them for 10 days in the AO polish but it was being used so I started them in the cerium. I'm still not impressed with that stuff.
