After two weeks of my tumbler sitting "IDLE"...(shame, shame) I finally decided to break some new material up and start a fresh batch. I was very disappointed in the Moctazuma Rough that I was doing and I think this will be a great looking batch. I am going to show some pictures of it during it's progress, so here it is before going into the barrels. This will be the first petrified wood that I have ever tumbled, and I am excited about the different colors that some of this stuff has in it. From dark greens, apple green, to clear. I hope this takes away my Tumbler Blues! Steve

Is that all pet wood? Wish I could find some colorful stuff like that but I have a hard time just finding pet wood. Good luck and toss those tumbler blues away.

Steve-
Brace yourself good man, because you're gonna be in for a wild ride. That petrified wood is as habit forming as any drug. Be Careful.......LOL
Good luck and can't wait to see progression photos.

Steve, That is an amazing looking load of wood. The green stuff is particularly facinating. I saw some green Hampton Butte wood polished when I was in Oregon a few months back -- really unusual and really pretty. That's why I couldn't resist pulling a piece or two out of the box. Can't wait to see how it comes out. And like Gaetz, I love the idea of progression pix.

Thanks guys! I think it's just what I needed...something more addictive, something that will give me the rush! Matt, the wood that I put in the box is the same stuff that I got on the same trip to Hamptons. I'll keep pics coming as progress keeps rolling. (10days) Steve

The marston and hampton butte are really beautiful. Have you seen polished hubbard basin pet wood? It's my favorite. I have a few pieces I bought from a guy called Rockshop and Sticks in Stones. If you haven't seen it, check out his site. Wish I could buy more! sigh!

Debs, I've actually bid on some of his stuff. He has some very good-looking rocks, but a little more than my budget can handle. The Hubbard Basin wood is very nice, but I think some of the best wood there is comes from Utah...the "Yellow Cat" Redwood! I have the Petrified Wood book from Daniels, and looking at the pictures in this book is just mouth watering! That material from Utah is just Amazing! To think I lived in Utah almost 35 years and never once went out and hunted for petrified Wood! DOH!! If you like Petrified Wood, this book is a must! Can't wait for winter to hit here in Oregon....Petrified Wood hunting at it's best! Steve

Matt, They drain all of the lakes here in the winter, thus exposing lots of petrified wood! This will be my first full winter here in Oregon, so I'm very excited. Last year we went and hunted for some pet wood at only one reservoir...Lookout Point, and I couldn't believe the amount of wood just laying around. I did find one great piece, that I had cut and polished. I'll try to post pics of it tomorrow. There are several lakes around within about an hour vicinity where I'm at, and hopefully I'll find some good stuff. It's also a good time to go Agate hunting on the Coast...lack of tourists leave the beaches virtually empty. I'm only an hour inland, so Winter is a fantastic time here in Oregon! Steve

Yes, I agree with you Steve. As I could afford it then, but not now. I'm glad I was able to get the few pieces I have. The yellow pet wood sounds very interesting. You will have to go hunting this winter and teeze us with those pics!!!

Steve-
Please tell me more about the Daniels book. Is this book specific to Utah?
I'll Google it and try to find out more. Hey, I thought you were thinking of coming back to Utah? What's going on with that? Take care.

Man, isn't nice when government can help a rockhound out? When do they start doing that? I may have to hook up with my Portland pals during the winter. Particularly since their wedding rituals precluded me from any rockhounding there earlier this year. And where are you located? matt

Matt, I'm not totally sure when the draining begins....since it will be my first "Settled" in winter here. We were at Lookout Point around March, and they hadn't started filling them yet. I'm sure that they start draining them before the rains begin. I'll ask around and find out for sure. I am in Veneta, about 10 minutes outside of Eugene. If you ever make it up this way, feel free to stop by. I'd love to have some fellow RH'rs swing by and visit. Gaetz, The book is Petrified Wood written by Frank J. Daniels. I bought it at Rockpick because he had some sort of special. Buy the book and get 40 dollars of Petrified Wood. I feel his prices are too high, but I still bought it. It's a great book, with lots of Great Pictures. Some of the wood in this wood leaves you speechless. It has wood from several States including Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, and Louisiana, as well as various countries. It also has pics of cones and ferns. 425 colored pictures to be exact. Great book and I've enjoyed having it around. I was thinking about coming back to Utah, but got a new job into something totally different, and it's working out very good for me. I'm going to call Oregon home for a long time. I really enjoy it now that I'm doing something I enjoy! It makes the world of difference. Here's a picture of the piece of Wood I found last Spring at Lookout Point. This was the first time hunting petrified wood, and when I uncovered this I was very unimpressed. I wasn't even sure if it was wood, until I had my buddy cut it and polish it. If I would've known it was going to be such a great piece, I would've probably dug around the area lots more. I doubt I'll ever find the spot where this was located, but I'm going to look again anyway. I guess that's where my GPS would come in handy. Enjoy the pics...

Wow Steve , that is an awesome load of petwood. I know from experience that you will love that petwood....I DO !! I am totaly impressed with the colour of that Australian wood I dug up whilst in Chinchilla. I still have plenty more to go , but hate to bust it up haha.
I also gave some pieces ( rough) away to the Gore club for the raffle. The winners were all tickled PINK.
Have fun with the wood . it will turn out great!!
