Hi All , here are some pics of the first pieces of my dug up Australian pet wood. I was not too impressed with the shine on them a few weeks ago and returned them to 600 grit again followed by another polish...another batch had done the same !! Now I have learned that I have to do the burnish a bit longer....me too I suffer from impatient-itis. One day burnish was not enough and these have had 3 days burnish. I had them out again after one day and still was not satisfied, so put them back in the barrel on advice of my son Henry . Great to get good advice from the younger generation. We oldies ( speak for myself) don't know everything yet ( anymore) I gave them a heavy dose of a block of sunlight soap. And I love them now !!! ;D ;D ;D enjoy Jack

Impressive, Jack. I'd heard that Aussie petwood is quite beautiful, and you've certainly got the material and the shine to back that up. I'm surprised that the multi-day cleaning in soap made such a difference for you. I've been trying to cut down this stage significantly as time goes on ... from several days, to half a day, to 4 hours... I should maybe think about this... BTW, you scooped me on the petwood pix by only minutes. I was loading some polished petwood pix I took today, only to check the board and see that you had posted your pix just 10 minutes earlier . Guess I'll sit on my pix for a day or two.

Thanks all for your good comments.
I had 3 batches of polished rock that I was not happy with. One I chucked in the garden among other rejects, number two went into redo containers and number three went back into burnish, with the wished for results for all to see above. I thought that my polish was perhaps contaminated, so put that aside and started a whole new charge in a cleaned barrel and new rocks...still not right after 1 day burnish. An other reason for the failure I thought might be the fact that I had quite a few agate in the mix. Proved that not to be the problem. The Lortone book actualy says that burnish should take 4 days or more !!!!
Again I emphasize that patience is the all important bit we tend to overlook.
Jack

My favorite ! petrified wood..... very good shine, I can look at my pet wood and find something different to look at each time with each piece. I swear they change at night while I'm asleep and get better ! <G> good job, donna
